Imagine blues and folk thrown together in one basket, psychedelic-rock and reggae thrown into another, both then wrapped and left ‘in the ground’ to meld into an aural feast. This is the sound of the Raumati Straights, in the words of Troy Hunt, “music from the earth with awesome burnt bits”.
Overdriven guitar, searing double bass and drums are the meat and potatoes. Trumpet, harmonica, flute and clarinet provide the seasoning. Lead Vocal duties are shared between Troy and Nigel, Patterson’s classical training balancing the roots-real style of Hunt.
The range of experience and influences is obvious in the Straights’ diverse music. From blistering blues-rock to haunting ballads played in a style that could only have come from the countryside of N.Z. This is Hangi-Rock, music by real people who have lived many lives and don’t take serious too seriously.
