In 1995 Orchard had his first taste of electronic music - and not from where you'd expect. Not from the radio, not from the TV, or even from the local music shop, but from his computer.
Why is this important in the history of Orchard I hear you ask? Well since mods were Orchards first true influence from electronic music, his roots still lie with the mod scene. Although his music has progressed years and years since then they were still a important part in making Orchard become Orchard.
1995 was also the first year Orchard started making music. Mods are different from mp3s - mp3s are the finished product. mods are the start, middle, and end. A mod file contains all the notes, all the samples and all the effect triggers. Back then the same programs that played mods, made mods. So it was very easy to see a mod you like - and then to remix it. And thats exactly how Orchard started.
Why is Orchard called Orchard? "Well its nothing big really, it was decided apon a while back when I was going thru my 'Anything blue is spiritual' phase. A friend of mine suggested it, and the name stuck. If you hear a story about
me living on a apple orchard with only a battery operated synth, its all lies..."
Of course when you start any hobby you suck at it, and Orchard was no exception. Writing music definatly does not come naturally to Orchard. His first mods, to put it bluntly - Stink!
As time went on Orchard started listening to non computer music. The big names in big beat were what first moved him. Acts like Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers, and Fatboy Slim inspired his first movement out of the mod arena.
A move like this was gonna require some samples. So Orchard went sampling crazy. He would spend hours just recording samples off all the CDs, tapes, records. Anything he could find.
