John Paul is the creation and brainchild of Paul Marshall.
John Paul is an eclectic mix of musical influences with elements of Lewis Capaldi and Ed Sheeran with the sophistication of songwriting greats like Lennon and McCartney.
John Paul songs take you on an emotional journey, whereby you ride the highs and lows of emotions and feelings as you embrace the songs influences, meanings and sometimes bizarre observations. Falling in and out of love as you navigate life’s intricacies alongside the songwriter.
Paul was born in London England but now resides in Auckland New Zealand.
Paul has a long history in the music business, he started performing in the UK when he was 12 and has been a founding member of many bands over the years. Before leaving England Paul auditioned as the drummer for The Cure and this was the last band he played in before immigrating. Upon arriving in New Zealand he started his own band Hangar 18 who went onto international success touring with acts such as Silverchair, Collective Soul, No Doubt, Ocean Colour Scene and more. Hangar 18 toured South East Asia prolifically and in 1997 they performed live at the historic Unity Hand Over Festival in Hong Kong live to a stadium audience of 10,000. Whilst the show was simulcast live on TV to over 900 million people around the globe, as the British rule of Hong Kong was handed back to the Chinese.
Paul has since started his own record label and international tour company and has personally worked with and toured artists such as Toto, Everclear, The Presidents of the United States of America, The Bomfunk MCs and The Searchers amongst others.
Paul has written over 300 songs to date and has selected the best singer/songwriter styled tracks for John Paul. Paul has been working closely with Grammy nominated, Aria winning, UK music producer Steve James who has produced and worked with George Harrison, The Sex Pistols, The Jam and Shirley Bassey amongst others.
John Paul is a melting pot of Paul’s vast musical influences, from acts like The Stranglers, The Clash, Generation X, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Skids, The Beatles, Joy Division, The Cure, Adam and the Ants, P.I.L., The Police, Del Amitri, Thomas Dolby, Fugazi, The Human League, Kraftwerk, U2, Gary Numan, Tears For Fears, The Sugar Cubes, Nirvana, Stereophonics, Athlete, Snow Patrol, Radiohead, Peter Gabriel, Phantogram, Tessa Violet, Kongos, Husky Loops, Furious Monkey House, BILK, Dodie and many more.
