Theatrical avant-pop mystics Birdfeeder (Wellington) make music that is haunting, hypnotic and riddled with ear worms. Performing with almost psychic synchronicity, they combine new wave, trip hop and psychedelic rock with vivid lyrical storytelling.
Core members Stephanie Cairns (keys/lead vocals and songwriting), Josh Harris (drums) and Marley Mokomoko-Young (bass) are joined live by Jasmine Toynbee on backing vocals and percussion.
More than just a band, Birdfeeder is all-encompassing art project. Some cool stuff they have done includes a smattering of self-produced music and video releases (Banana Boxes, The Vile Isle EP), and the immersive, mind-bending stage show The Veiled Isle (Loemis 2021, NZ Fringe, Nelson Fringe 2022). They’ve toured as far afield as Auckland and Dunedin and played on stages such as Wellington’s Performance Arcade, Newtown Festival, CubaDupa, and indie festival Bush Bash.
