K.Kila is a musician from Otara, New Zealand, with roots leading back to Niue mixed with Cook Island Maori ethnicity. Starting from humble beginnings in a small house with 21 people living together, his ambition to succeed is fueled by wanting to differentiate himself from those that he was surrounded by. The self-described “Black Sheep of the Family”, 25-year-old K.Kila pulled himself out of depression and drug abuse by finding his solace in music.
With impressive story-telling ability in his songs, K.Kila’s authentic music has racked up considerable numbers and strong support from his neighbourhood with a strong community connection. Inspired by legends such as Biggie and Face Killa, he describes his music as “Forever music, real-life struggles that everyone from the gutter can relate to. Music that I believe people that experienced a similar upbringing to me will always drink to and smoke to while bobbing their heads.” Songs such as Cold Life and Raised in the Gudda have gained over 500,000 views on YouTube collectively, and his relatability and authenticity speak directly to the listener from his seamless ability to deliver real-life stories with his unique cadences.
