Upper Hutt Posse

Bio

Upper Hutt Posse formed in 1985 originally as a four piece Reggae group. In 1988 they released Aotearoa's first rap record, E Tü through Jayrem Records (NZ's first Rap Record Label), and with it they defined themselves as one of Mäori youth's most relevant voices, and more than that, a voice for the youth of Aotearoa, and all those who see the need for change.

Upper Hutt Posse released their debut album Against The Flow in 1989 on Southside Records. This followed with a tour to Australia and America in 1990.

In October, 1992, a documentary on Upper Hutt Posse's visit to America - Solidarity aired on TV One's Marae programme. In 1993, Upper Hutt Posse performed at the first Polynesian Music Festival in Rarotonga.

Darryl Thompson went on to become DLT, Dean Hapeta formed Kia Kaha Productions Ltd and now performs under the guise of Te Kupu and Teremoana Rapley became one of the hosts of Mai Time.

Few musicians nowadays have the balls that this group had. Upper Hutt Posse are the pioneers of New Zealand Hip-Hop. They originally formed as a Reggae group in 1985, but by 1988 they had released the country's first rap record E Tu. They were different, they brought a new style, and they were a strong, political and conscious voice for youth and Maori alike. The posse are still alive and well today.
