Otautahi-based singer-songwriter Amber Carly Williams possesses a rare voice, one that instantly steals the attention of any audience and, paired now with an exciting new body of work, is set to take her place amongst the upper echelon of New Zealand's indie-pop scene.
In late 2023, Amber will release 21 Roses; a highly-anticipated EP backed by NZ On Air's Development Programme that showcases an artist with an expressive maturity beyond her years.
Recorded with an entirely Otautahi-based team, led by producer Terence O'Connor (Blue Nude), its sound recalls the likes of Julien Baker, Lizzy McAlpine and The Japanese House, placing Amber Carly Williams amongst a local cohort of wahine indie artists that includes Alisa Xayalith, Alayna and Georgia Lines.
Alongside the production of her latest EP, Amber has also been busy developing her live presence, not only via regular gigs around Otautahi but also nationally on stages such as Bay Dreams and Spark Sessions.
Amber also gained valuable experience, exposure and connections while participating in TVNZ's redux of Popstars through which she was able to write and record with the likes of Kimbra, Timon Martin (BENEE) and Jeremy Redmore (Midnight Youth).
Brought up in a household that filled its rooms with music whenever possible, Amber initially began her artistic journey as a guitarist, only later discovering her voice and then using it as a tool to decode a childhood experience disrupted by the tragic loss of her mother.
“When I’m able to come up with a melody or chord progression that sparks a memory or feeling of a moment, then the words just flow.”
The release of 21 Roses is set to be accompanied by a tour covering Christchurch, Auckland and Rolling Meadows festival, setting Amber up as a must-see act for indie music fans in Aotearoa this summer.
