With her new EP, Kiwi/Chilean starlet Amila is debuting as a refreshing entrant to the globalised pop-sphere.
Camila Roa Nunez, who writes and records as Amila (pronounced ‘a-meela’) is a bright new bilingual voice in the New Zealand music scene. Amila made her first impression as a natural talent in 2018 when she released her debut single and music video Owe It All To You – both of which are dedicated to her family who sacrificed everything in search of a better life.
Born in Chile, Amila moved to New Zealand with her family when she was 7-years-old. Music provided a way for Spanish-speaking Amila to learn English and express herself as a newcomer to life and culture in Aotearoa.
The digital native is in a league of her own blending the Chilean and Aotearoa culture and sounds in an NZ pop first. She has an old soul that draws inspiration from the raw guitars of the 70s, vibrant salsa anthems of her homeland, as well as the strong visuals of the modern pop world. Appealing to the audiences of internet-era pop sensations like Steve Lacey, The Weeknd, Olivia Rodrigo and Rosalia – Amila’s signature is vibrant, fresh, colourful, and authentic. Her sound is more pure pop than the overengineered trend, allowing her lyrics and sweet vocals to be centre stage.
Amila’s ‘give anything a try’ attitude has forged an exciting start to her promising career, which she says will forever be inspired by her love for her family. And with a humble ‘come as you are’ outlook – Amila is set to become a beacon of light in an era of uncertainty for her generation.
