Formed in the mid 2000’s The Circling Sun is a sonic collective from Tamaki Makaurau focused on progressive Afrocentric inspired Jazz music
Featuring some of the finest talents in music from Aotearoa, members include: Ben Turua (Avantdale Bowling Club, Nathan Haines), Julien Dyne (Ladi6, Avantdale Bowling Club, Solo Soundway Records, Half Hexagon), J.Y Lee (Yoko-Zuna, CHAII, Avantdale Bowling Club, Sir Dave Dobbyn), Guy Harrison (Troy Kingi, Avantdale Bowling Club, Bailey Wiley), Cameron Allen (Opensouls, Relaxomatic Project), Finn Scholes (Carnivorous Plant Society / Sir Dave Dobbyn) and Matt Hunter aka Kenny Sterling (Manuka Recordings, Summer Vee).
The Circling Sun has Performed at the Wellington International Jazz festival and Currently holds a monthly residency at East St Hall in Auckland where they perform a deep selection of original works and lesser known compositions , researched and curated from many years of record collecting and study.
Stylistically the Circling Sun draws influence from African American pioneers including Alice Coltrane, Yusef Lateef and Pharoah Sanders and others fusing it with a love and appreciation of African, Latin and modern music, melded together with a unique South Pacific spirit and sensibility.
