Crash

Bio

Crash formed in the early 90's and were swimming in the same indie rock waters of the time as bands like Pixies, Breeders, Sonic Youth, Veruca Salt, Belly, L7, Manic Street Preachers and The Primitives, combining that with Singer Natasha Reid's pure toned vocals (landing somewhere between Kate Bush and Debbie Harry), giving the band their own distinct sound.

The band had substantial alternative radio success and produced 3 Failsafe Records & NZ on Air funded videos to go with their singles released on 2 cassette EPs in league with Failsafe Records.

Failsafe took their 'overseas experience' break in 1996 leaving Crash to pursue other options and with a full head of steam and lots of songs they teamed up with Warners NZ to record and release their debut full length album in Auckland's top recording studios, with some of the best alternative producers including Neil Baldock and Nick Roughan.

Things however did not pan out when Warners became infatuated with recent Christchurch discovery The Feelers and Crash were left with a fully recorded high end studio album and no label to back them.

Pipped at the finish line after the mammoth effort to complete the album the wind was taken out of their sails enough to stall the band.

The album was never released and New Zealand, and the wider world lost the opportunity to hear these well crafted and expertly recorded songs.

Fast forward to October 2020 and Rob Mayes at Failsafe was going through his recording archive looking for material to include on an expanded version of the Label's 1994 compilation Good Things which covered NZs indie rock and shoegaze scene of the time. He had a listen to some early demos Crash had sent him on cassette (unaware of the unreleased album). Rob reached out and contacted the band and asked if they had anything else recorded, and, ...they did.

Unfortunately with Covid and lockdowns it was difficult for the band to retrieve the masters from storage but when things eased up the in 2022 masters were found, Remastering was done and here we have it. The Album we could have had some 25 years ago, which in 2023 still sounds vibrant and timely.
Big guitars, great songs and Natasha's floating vocals are complemented by strong rhythm sessions and excellent production.
