Toby Sussex is an indie folk-pop singer-songwriter, guitarist and producer based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara. In 2023, he completed a Bachelor of Commercial Music at Massey University, majoring in Music Practice. Originally from Whakatu-Nelson, Toby moved up to pursue music in 2021, recording and releasing his first two singles Metronome and Deja Vu. University was also where Toby met and joined folk-rock band My Cosmic Girl, who have quickly developed a loyal fanbase through energetic gigs and the release of Frenchie (2022) and their latest single Help It (2024).
Toby has found himself performing as a soloist at plenty of festivals and venues around the Wellington and Nelson regions, including Newtown Festival, WCC Gardens Magic, the Songwriters Showcase at Moon, Serene Sounds at 216 Cuba, Auntie Social, Taste Tasman, Tahuna Summer Sounds, Winter Vibes festival, and Massey’s Exposure showcase. When performing live, Toby’s heartfelt, melodic vocals fuel a carefully crafted acoustic and live-looped signature sound.
In April 2024, Toby released Feel Better, the intimate and soulful first single from his upcoming debut EP, Weather Dependent. To some notable excitement, following shortly after came the upbeat and existential second single, Life Slips. Both of these songs have been playlisted across student and regional radio stations around NZ. Weather Dependent is out on 24th May, 2024 and features four unique and thoroughly road-tested songs - home-grown, folk-fuelled and ready for your ears. Stay tuned for more from this up and coming artist!
