If you have ever sat down during a mainroom DJ set, then you obviously were not listening to Freq Nasty! Darin McFadyen as he is known to his parents, is regarded world-wide as one of the best energetic entertainers that continues to break ground with his phat bass-lines and rhythms that literally will not allow you to stand still. Earlier today I was given the chance to chat with Darin about his life as the Psy Fi Super Hero - Freq Nasty.
I guess I should point out straight away that Freq is a very relaxed and calm individual who loves doing what he does. The hype that goes alongside it is not really him, but I'm finding it hard not to get excited about even writing about someone like this who is so down to earth and excites and entertains people from all corners of the globe.
Freq Nasty grew up in New Zealand and it was in the mid 80's that he was first attracted to the world of underground music. It was the sounds of Hip-Hop that were most prevalent in the scene at the time that appealed to Darin and inspired him to write music. "It was the time when cheap samplers came out and the world of Hip Hop was instantly changed because people could start blending different types of music easily and quickly". He bought himself an ensoniq sampler and started writing music that we would now describe as Trip Hop and he actually wrote an entire album that was never actually released.
Darin started off as a musician playing drums and bass in backyard band type setups with his friends and with the sampler. The interbreeding of drum techniques from Hip Hop, Trip Hop, Garage, House and the bottom end of Jungle bass lines started to form this underground sound that people to this day are still trying to define into genres. "I guess New School Breaks is how people describe this music, however it is a fusion of so many styles that I just call it Breaks".
