MarineVille

Bio

Wellington-based alt/indie quartet who have released four LPs between 2001-2017. Each album has featured a different line up with songwriter Mark Williams the constant.

The bands 4th album Penguins ate my Chips is described as "the most punchy and direct collection of songs in the MV canon thus far" (Flying Out). The single Face was one of Byron Coley's Top 10 singles for 2016 in Wire magazine.

“… if you’re interested in hearing well-crafted, adventurous guitar music consciously building on our underground guitar heritage, then there isn’t a band that’s doing a better job of it right now than MarineVille“. – Steve Kerr, Staple Magazine

Although based in Wellington, three quarters of MarineVille hail from Dunedin, and drummer Greg Cairns and bassist Denise Roughan were both in bands associated with the first wave of Flying Nun Records – Greg formerly of Verlaines, King Loser, The Renderers and Bonnie Prince Billy) Denise (The 3Ds, Ghost Club). Jeremy Coubrough (you may remember from Tlaotlon) and Mark Williams from Bad Statistics, Cookie Brooklyn and the Crumbs and Baa Baa And the Black Sheep.

Early releases include Diving The Wreck (2004 Involve Records) and Ready For The Dance (2001 Oak Park Records). MarineVille released their 3rd album Fowl Swoop (12" LP/CD-R) in 2011. Their 7” Face/Eat Toast was named by Byron Coley in Wire Magazine as one of the top 10 singles of 2016.

The band’s latest statement, Penguins ate my Chips, was released by Austrian label Zelle. The dozen songs on Penguins ate my Chips continue the musical trajectory of their previous release – “no-wave keyboards, coarse and/or slashing guitar and those non-mawkish emo vocals that NZ is famous for …” (Byron Coley).

Sessions for this album began in the bands Wellington warehouse, nestled in between a local gang headquarters, an animal sanctuary and a meth-crazed neighbour who was eventually arrested for driving on a child’s motorcycle whilst waving a sawn off shotgun. Penguins ate my Chips was mixed and mastered in Dunedin by Forbes Williams.

After the release of Penguins ate my Chips drummer Greg Cairns relocated to Dunedin, where the band subsequently recruited Tenzin Mullin and Craig Monk and played live shows with Williams visiting from Wellington.
