Born and raised in Christchurch, leading New Zealand DJ Chris Cox has been addicted to music since he was old enough to hit play on the family turntable, digging Solid Gold Hits like The Commodores’ 'Brick House' from the depths of his parents’ record collection at an early age. He’s been behind the decks since his mid-teens, first stepping out with the Solaa crew and spinning soulful beats before, during and after the popular live funk-soul-jazz band’s sets.
Since relocating to Auckland in 2000 he’s been hard at work with his fingers in many musical pies - retail, radio, DJing, production, live performance, promotion Resident DJ at notorious nightspot Khuja Lounge, his skills behind the turntables were recognised with selection to attend the 2002 Red Bull Music Academy in Sao Paolo, Brazil. As well as a healthy dose of sunshine (or was that just a "club tan"???), Chris picked up words of wisdom from the likes of Brazilian musical legend Gilberto Gil, relative newcomer DJ Patife and international luminaries like Cut Chemist, Madlib and Carl Craig. Having soaked up the experiences, insights and production tips of many of his musical heroes, Chris has gone from strength to strength ever since in both the local and international music scenes.
Cox formed his first production unit ThisInformation with former Solaa cohort Isaac Aesili and engineer Luke Farry a few years ago and roped in Antipodean Records founder Mark de Clive-Lowe for a guest keyboard spot on the debut single 'Extensions Of Da Mindz'.
Released on small local label Pinacolada with no international distribution, the single still managed to find its way into the hands and playlists of major international players like Recloose, Jazzanova, Les Gammas and Kyoto Jazz Massive, and has recently been licensed for re-release internationally by Italian label Electrosacher (12" single coming soon!).
Chris’ relationship with Antipodean Records solidified with the launch in mid-2003 of 'Places And Spaces' - Antipodean’s monthly clubnight at Khuja Lounge in Auckland, hosted by ThisInformation main men Chris Cox and Isaac Aesili. In six short months they’ve played host to noted international and local DJs including members of London’s Bugz In The Attic crew and AK heavy hitters Manuel Bundy and Cian, as well as presenting live performers Cherie Mathieson, Rikki Gooch (of TrinityRoots), The Nabatean, The Illphonic Orchestra and others.
They’ve quickly developed a solid fan base in Auckland and in December took the 'Places And Spaces' roadshow on tour around New Zealand’s main centres with Mark de Clive-Lowe and Cherie Mathieson in tow.
