This Night Creeps

Bio

Voted 'Best New Band' of 2002 by followers of local punk website www.punkas.com.

With a heavy writing and recording schedule keeping them typically low key. This Night Creeps sporadically debuted new material throughout 2005. Sharing bills with The Mint Chicks, Die! Die! Die! and Melbourne’s Colditz Glider.

Described as "cinematic, emotionally and structurally complex
music" (punkas.com) and among other things, "arty and smart, but not in the disappearing up their own crack kind of way" (Vice magazine) as well as being tipped as "Ones to Succeed" (Real Groove Magazine).

Known for their spontaneously destructive and unpredictably chaotic live show This Night Creeps have achieved much since the release of their self titled CD of 2003. Bringing their intense guitar-driven electro sound to audiences throughout Australasia; playing numerous international supports and tours with both local and international heavyweights.

This Night Creeps formed in early 2002 as a previous bands framework and direction began to inhibit the members. Luke and Steve from Hamilton Punk band My Two Cents decided to start afresh with Steve switching from bass to drums and Luke remaining as guitarist/vocalist. With the addition of long time friend Jeffrey Burch joining on bass the birth of This Night Creeps was now complete.

Drawing from wide influences each song project undertaken in the initial writing process was an interesting experience for the members due to a focus on trying to play in a way that was unfamiliar. Experimenting with different guitar tones, unusual timings and more intense dynamics than the three were previously experienced in using. This resulted in long journeys into experimental compositions that would sometimes go nowhere but other times reward with more interesting ways of arranging songs that are apparent upon the first few tries.

With a couple of songs nearing completion the need for a second guitarist was becoming apparent, mainly for more complex melody and layering, but also just to fill in the sound which by this stage was quite organic and raw. The three members had discussed options but nothing seemed like it would work, until Luke took it upon himself to ask Mark Brendorffer to join the band. Mark (Dryden) was living in Whakatane at the time recovering from a serious car accident in which he injured his back. So a four track tape in the mail and a few weeks later Mark appeared at rehearsal in Hamilton with a beautiful second guitar part for Peasant Evening. The first song the group ever completed. With Mark in place another lead vocal was added without a hitch and the first set of five songs appeared, followed shortly by their debut live performance to a small group of close friends at their Hillcrest rehearsal space.

Band Members:
Luke McPake (guitar, vocals)
Mark Brenndorfer (guitar, vocals)
Adam 'Pads' McKay (bass)
Mark Seeney-Wurzel (drums)

This Night Creeps Call It A Day
Posted: Thu Aug 31, 2006 10:21 am
In sad news for anyone interested in vibrant, innovative music, Hamilton's This Night Creeps are breaking up. After several years and two EPs, the band have decided to call it a day for the same kind of reasons that kept the post-hardcore group constantly breaking new musical ground.

Anybody who has seen the 'Creeps live know that they rarely play older material, preferring instead to focus on their latest as the band keeps taking new directions in sound. But now This Night Creeps find themselves in a situation where they have not written any new songs in some time.

"Without new material The 'Creeps basically don't exist," frontman Luke McPake stated in an email to us, "Our natural state is writing new music. New to our fans but more importantly new to us. Seeing as we have stopped doing this, it must be time to stop playing old songs. As much as we love driving around in vans cracking each other up and drinking beer we have to give this away fo the new opportunities in our lives, be they music, study, art or whatever."

The amicable split is going out in style with a final This Night Creeps North Island tour with acts they describe as "friends and favourites." The three-date last hurrah is as follows:

Thursday, September 14 - Underground Bar, Auckland (w/The Mint Chicks, White Birds And Lemons, Sunny Tokyo) [R18]
Friday, September 15 - The Castle, Hamilton (w/The Mint Chicks, White Birds And Lemons, The Vacants, The New Caledonia) [R18]
Saturday, September 16 - San Francisco Bathhouse, Wellington (w/The Mint Chicks, The Vacants, Sunny Tokyo, Fighting The Shakes) [R18]

This is quite literally your last chance to see one of the most original genre bands of the past decade...

TNC may have been quiet on the live front lately but they have been hard at work in the studio recording two new tracks. These tracks will not be released but will be available exclusively via 1157 and TNC official website. TNC is also in the final stages of completing their debut video, which we will have for you as soon as it's available. Look out for TNC on the road with The Bleeders during October/November.
