Hot off the back of a momentum gathering year, Poneke rockers Pass The Peas have released Totes - their debut single as a 5-piece - and announced upcoming EP Strange Favours.
Inspired by the complicated relationship between basketballers Russel Westbrook and Devin Durant, Totes describes the insincere interactions people have with each other when relationships end. “It’s about the competitive need to be doing better than the other person” says songwriter and vocalist Kurt Verkuylen. Recorded in Wellington and produced by local legend Toby Lloyd, look out for slinging guitar, stadium-filling drums and sub-bass synthesisers in this hot new single.
Pass the Peas have been making a massive impact across Wellington and Aotearoa, following from the release of their 2019 4-piece EP Greek Heat. This collection of characters fuse pop, jazz and rock n’ roll confidently, reflecting their experiences playing together in bands and jazz bands throughout high school.
This single and new EP is Pass The Peas’ first release as a 5-piece. After welcoming Alice Alsweiler to the band as a lead guitarist, Pass The Peas have elevated their songcraft. Alice has brought a lot to the table, and her searing guitar and backing vocals add an extra weight to this single and the EP.
Notable for their energetic shows and Vurkeylen’s enigmatic stage presence, Pass The Peas are celebrating the release of Totes at Wellington’s Meow next Thursday, 15th October. Catch them there alongside local talents Club Classic and Androgynous Lemon, or keep your eyes peeled for a gig announcement in a region near you.
Totes was written by Pass the Peas, recorded and mixed by Toby Lloyd and mastered by Robin Schmidt. Artwork by Joshua Hunter.
