Tamaki Makaurau based Nigerian Hip-Hop artist and producer Mazbou Q continues his series of fortnightly releases with the new fiery installment Deserter set for Friday March 26th. Driven by roaring synths, powerful 808’s and an anthemic overdriven guitar line, this self produced track is a provocative, genre-bending number that showcases more of Mazbou Q’s singing voice than ever before.
Deserter is antagonistic and confrontational, which has been uncharacteristic for Mazbou Q. “It’s about someone who, as part of an oppressed minority, abandons their people and capes for their oppressors. I’m not usually spiteful in my music, but when I imagined having a conversation with someone like Candace Owens, this is what came out" he says. “Feelings of anger, betrayal, loss and disgust are all heavily themed in this record”
Deserter follows up previously released single The Get Up as the second track in Mazbou Q’s sophomore body of work; an evolving album drip fed single by single every fortnight, the name and length of which remain undisclosed. After a name change from ‘Unchained XL’ in early 2020 and the release of his debut EP Afroternity, Mazbou Q gained publicity for reasons beyond the domain of music as well. That year he gained the attention of BBC, Euronews and Huffington Post UK for his work in the organisation of the Auckland Black Lives Matter solidarity march in June. He also organised the Auckland #EndSARS protest, addressing the issue of police brutality in his home country of Nigeria.
“I’m passionate about helping to make the world a better place for any group who is seeking true liberation, my people in particular. We all feel a sense of betrayal when we see those among us who would rather sell out than participate in our struggle. They hurt us. Deserter goes out to them"
Deserter will be available from Friday 26 March.
