With sparse, electric guitar lead verses, the track swells into full bodied choruses carried with the warm vocal tones of Emily Wheatcroft-Snape, the Aotearoa audio engineer/producer behind the exciting music project of EM. The single weaves in lyrical layers of thoughtfulness, reflecting on how one stays true to themselves over time and in different situations.
“I wrote the song after having a spur of the moment weekend away with some friends; one of those trips where everything goes well, everything feels great and you feel like your relationships have a new layer to them,” explains EM.
“You’re on top of the world and come home feeling like you’ve changed in some way, only to wake up the next morning with your life exactly the same as you left and reckoning with the fact that things go back to normal. I’m not always the best version of myself, why?”
After initially writing the track at her flat in Grey Lynn, it all came together at the end of a session at Parachute Studios. With Amy Boreovich recording bass parts, EM was finally able to finish the single.
“After I finally had good guitars and bass, I basically moved into my mix room at Parachute and completed the song; adding horns, changing up the drums, completely changing the structure, and adjusting a few lyrics”
The Love and the Fight is the second single, following Undergrowth, to be released off her upcoming EP Undergrowth. The signature dreamy vocal harmonies and layers of weird synths of these two singles gives a hint at what’s to come from EM’s highly anticipated EP.
