Tauranga based artist Skye Hine has released her latest single and video, the epic and empowering track Behind the Gun, out today.

Carried on the bed of a haunting piano, Behind the Gun swells into cinematic choruses swirling with breathtaking backing vocals, all held down by an epic rhythm section. Skye Hine’s vocals are flawless and emotive; delicate then soaring, in their expression of empowerment and its many forms.

“This song can have so many angles to it,” explains Skye. “It’s about the angel and devil on your shoulder, it’s about the emotional entanglements of relationships and it is also about the ability to take control of yourself and be completely aware of where you sit in the world. It’s cinematic, and ultimately brings with it a feeling of empowerment.”

Made with support from NZ On Air, the single was solely written by Skye Hine and produced by Joe Faris. Lockdowns proved a challenge when it came to recording vocals; initially they were to be recorded in Auckland, but Skye eventually did it herself, out of her home studio in Tauranga. It ended up being the perfect setting for the final vocal takes.

“I’m proud of this song,” says Skye. “I think listeners would generally expect to hear soft and mellow vocals from me but this song pushes me past that point so, as an artist it's a reflection of just one element of how I use my vocals.”

Also out today is the accompanying video; a moody and dramatic visual depiction of the track's feeling of empowerment and internal reflection. Skye Hine’s performance is captivating, as she moves between a range of stunningly atmospheric settings, surrounded in smoke and mirrors.

Born Skye-Lily Pokai to parents Henry Pokai (Ngāti Porou/Tuhoe) and Miranda Devereaux (Te Arawa/Tainui/Maniapoto/Ngāiterangi tribes), Skye Hine took Aotearoa by storm as a Top 4 Finalist on the 2021 TV2 series Popstars, where she was mentored by Grammy-award winning artist Kimbra. Her debut single Outlier further catapulted her successfully into the New Zealand music scene, with the track reaching #7 on the Hot NZ Singles Chart.
