Atlantic Records and Warner Music Australasia have announced the multi-talented Balu Brigada as the latest members of its prestigious roster. Comprised of multi-instrumentalist/songwriter/producer brothers from New Zealand, Henry and Pierre Beasley – Fresh off the back of shows in Auckland and Sydney, Balu Brigada are celebrating the announcement with the release of their debut EP, I Should Be Home.
“We’re thrilled to team up with our partners at Warner Music Australasia on the incredible Balu Brigada” said Craig Kallman, Chairman and CEO of Atlantic Records. “Developing artists and breaking new talent around the globe is our key mission at Atlantic Records. We couldn’t be more excited to do that with Balu Brigada and welcome them to the Atlantic family.”
“It is a great moment for Warner Music Australasia to be teaming up with Atlantic Records on the joint signing of Balu Brigada for the world” said Dan Rosen, President of Warner Music Australasia. “This is the first deal WMA has done with Atlantic as joint venture label partners and to do this with Balu Brigada, one of New Zealand’s most exciting artists is really something special. We continue to strive to break our Aussie and Kiwi acts on the global stage and this partnership with the incredible team at Atlantic is the perfect launching pad for us to take the music of Balu Brigada to the world.”
Embodied by the overarching metaphor of an epic night out, the 7-track collection I Should Be Home details the blurry experiences of growing into your own skin as a twenty-something, from messy break-ups to drunken epiphanies, recalling both the sugar rush of the party’s start and the sobering realization the fun has worn off.
Hailed by i-D as “an actual band of brothers making tunes stacked with hooks that’ll run circles around your brain for days,” the key to Balu Brigada’s magic is their inimitable brotherly bond, with their joy for each other coming through in everything they do. The Beasleys’ musical conversation mirrors their real-life communication, as dual-vocalists, multi-instrumentalists, songwriters, and co-producers, finishing each other’s sentences both in everyday discourse and in song.
The duo have spent much of the past few years creating a unique future-facing sound of their own, prioritizing prominent bass hooks and punchy drums while showcasing a left-of-center pop sensibility and natural ability to skate genres. Tracks such as Preview, How It Would End, Number One, and Favourite Clothes – all included on I Should Be Home – have already earned the duo critical applause from such outlets as Coup de Main, i-D, and Ones To Watch, which praised their “soaring falsetto choruses, synth hooks and an irresistible, underlying groove.” An exclusive OnesToWatch live performance and Q&A – filmed at Everybody's in Auckland, NZ – is streaming now via YouTube HERE.
