Deva Mahal delivers vibey bedroom bop 'Run Me Through' ahead of nationwide tour

Pōneke-based Deva Mahal lays it down on Run Me Through - the smooth and soulful first single (out today) from her upcoming EP, Future Classic: Vol 1 – Classic and ahead of her New Zealand tour kicking off on November 4.

A modern take on classic R&B, Soul, Jazz and Pop, Run Me Through is all about the age-old dilemma of falling for the wrong person. It showcases Deva’s unmistakable vocals; songwriting prowess and sees the talented singer-songwriter flexing her production skills alongside Chris Wethey and Michael Howell.

“This is the first home studio track I’ve ever released as a co-writer and co-producer. It was tracked between three different bedrooms and by three different people who, together, wrote and produced a vibey ass bedroom two step bop!”, says Deva.

Every vibey ass bop must be accompanied by a vibey ass music video (made almost entirely by women) and Run Me Through does not disappoint! “Me and my bad-ass bounty hunter crew are roaming the countryside in pursuit of the land’s most wanted bounties,” Deva says of the clip, which she oversaw as creative director alongside director Naomi Haussmann; producer Julie Gursha and Julian Vares on camera.

The striking video perfectly captures the power and the beauty of Run Me Through and as Deva aptly sums up: “No one is immune to love, but never forget that actions speak louder than words and love is not just a noun, it’s a verb.”

The song and the video make way for the release of Deva’s Future Classic: Vol 1 – Classic, which is due out on November 4, and gives fans a good taste of what they can expect from the EP. “Each track on this EP is marinated with classic genres of music that inspire me and have influenced my journey as an artist.”

And of course, fans will also be able to experience the full impact of Future Classic: Vol 1 – Classic live on Deva’s four-date New Zealand tour, presented by Eccles Entertainment.

Deva and her full band will perform at the MTG in Napier on Friday, November 4; the Wintergarden at The Civic in Auckland on Saturday, November 5; St James in Wellington on Friday, November 11 and the Isaac Theatre Royal in Christchurch on Saturday, November 12.

Unequivocally one of our most astounding recording and touring artists, Deva Mahal was born with blues in her blood. Beginning from her upbringing in Hawaii to discovering her voice in New Zealand. Deva has spent the last few years in Aotearoa following a massive surgery and the devastating Covid-19 pandemic taking that time to delve deeper into her craft as a composer as well as cultivating her skills as a producer, alongside Christchurch born, Chris Wethey.

Her newest project (Future Classic: Vol 1 – Classic) passionately channels into her music the staggering heartbreak of the current racial violence and political injustices of her country of origin, the eternal endeavour to search for true love and self-worth, and her emboldened sense of the sensuality, softness and power as a Black woman.
