Rebel Reid, (pictured) a guitarist for the unique, bombastic female-led South Auckland band Valkyrie, Rebel has been shredding guitar from a young age and has received both accolades and airplay. Alongside tours with Six60 and three appearances at Splore Festival, the band was nominated for Best Video by a Māori artist at the Waiata Māori Music Awards and recently spent time this year in Los Angeles, recording singles and filming rooftop videos for the likes of Rolling Stone.
Reshma Martin is a Malaysian/Kiwi powerhouse pop/alt pop singer and songwriter. Born in Kuala Lumpur and raised in Taranaki, she began her professional music career in 2016 after appearing on the final season of Malaysian singing competition Akademi Fantasia. Reshma recently won one of three Auckland City Of Music Equialiser Grants and is a music educator at an Auckland High School.
Cory Newman is the frontman of punk band Sit Down In Front and sings from a wheelchair. His band recently released their third album, with multiple songs gaining significant radio airplay and chart time leading to tours with the likes of Jimmy Barnes and Cold Chisel. They have also played Rhythm & Vines, TV3’s ‘The Project’, TV1’s ‘Breakfast, and ‘Sunday’ as well as featuring kiwi music legend Tiki Taane on one of their recent singles, Pixie Caramel.
Wallace Gollan describes her music as ‘Future Soul’, Wallace draws from many different influences including jazz, soul, hip-hop and electronic genres. Releasing her first singles in 2015, she released her debut album just a few weeks ago and has also collaborated with artists such as Sola Rosa and Sampa The Great, as well as supported the likes of Rag ‘N’Bone Man, Morcheeba, Little Simz, Jordan Rake, and Winston Surfshirt in both NZ, Australia, and Europe.
Thabani Gapara as one of New Zealand’s most high-profile saxophonists, Thabani currently performs with the likes of Katchafire, Stan Walker, Tomorrow People, Synthony, Hipstamatics and many more. Originally from Zimbabwe, he is frequently seen on both local and international stages, from X-Factor to Homegrown. He also has solo projects where his passion is combining elements of jazz, funk, and contemporary genres with African influences.
Winners will become Shure Artists and take home some killer Shure gear including custom-coloured SM58 microphones, in-ear headphones, and exclusive merchandise.
“The response from artists around New Zealand was amazing, we had over 300 entries from both established and up-and-coming vocalists, bands, and musicians who wanted to be part of the Shure story” says John Faulding, artist relations for NSL, the Shure distributor. “Many of them were already loyal to this iconic brand and it was really hard to choose the winners as the quality of talent out there was inspirational. We look forward to working with some of these truly awesome artists and keep supporting NZ Music well beyond this campaign.”
