Social Sport is the solo project of Ōtautahi/Christchurch producer Will Duncan. His inaugural release on Plastician’s UK label Terrorythm came to life in Aotearoa/New Zealand’s striking Mackenzie Country.
The alpine basin is surrounded by snow-capped peaks on one side, the Southern Alps on the other, and expansive grasslands between. Three of the recordings came from sessions that were split between a small log burner and cold plunges in Lake Ohau.
“The water was mostly glacial runoff so I would get a massive shot of adrenaline, walk back to the house and continue making tunes. It was bliss.”
Amidst lockdowns and pandemic restrictions, the makeshift studio of synths & drum machines, is responsible for the majority of Organic Chemistry. The final track, a result of another lockdown, with fellow Ōtautahi producer and friend Jagā (Ben Hunt).
Organic Chemistry will be available via Bandcamp on the 28th and is accompanied by a limited run of 30 NFTS via Autonomies.
Press release from Terrorythym regarding their adoption of NFTS:
“We
will be offering a very limited run of just 30 NFT copies of the E.P. via NFT
marketplace, https://Autonomies.io. The NFT version will be
priced at just $5 bringing it in line with the pricing of a regular Bandcamp
download of the E.P. which will be priced at £4 GBP plus taxes. Think of this
like a vinyl pressing for a digital era, just one box "pressed" at 30
units. We will be offering Social Sport and any of our future artists releasing
NFT's a 75% split of sales on NFT's as a statement of intent for the future of
independent record releasing (historically, standard independent label
contracts usually split at 50/50). We believe NFT's have the potential to
change the way people consume and collect music in the digital space for the
better of artists, and recognize that the industry can do better for
futureproofing artist's livelihoods as well as allowing independent labels like
ourselves an incentive to keep building and supporting grassroots musicians.
Owners of the NFT will be able to download the E.P. audio files from Autonomies
at time of purchase, just like a regular E.P. download, and their collectible
NFT token will live on the Polygon network which operates on extremely low fees
and energy consumption.”
Available
on all streaming services November 4th.
