Band & Musician News - Meech Brothers Announce Return with Single 'Kind Enough' out 27 May

Meech Brothers Announce Return with Single 'Kind Enough' out 27 May

22 May 2023 - 0 Comments

Wellington/Pōneke’s Meech Brothers will release their first new music since 2017’s Brown Owl EP this May with single Kind Enough.

Kind Enough sees not only a return to their familiar touchstones – drum machines and synths blended with pianos and acoustic guitars – but also a shift away from Brown Owl’s dark moodiness to something a bit brighter and more hopeful. The DIY indie ethic that has served them well over the preceding three EPs remains intact with this track self-recorded in Gareth’s cabin studio - with him and brother Clint playing all of the instruments.

Kind Enough will be released - before NZ Music Month closes out – on 27 May and will be streaming everywhere (and available on Bandcamp). It will be followed by their quirkiest and most fun single yet – Korean Restaurant – in June.

For fans of SJD, The Flaming Lips, Badly Drawn Boy.

Gareth and Clint have been playing music together – and apart - in various bands since high school. They have been releasing music as the Meech Brothers since 2009 and so far have three EPs to their name (Lost at Sea, poco, Brown Owl). Clint has also played keyboards with Anxiety Club and Matt Langley and recently joined indie survivors Orangefarm.

Praise for the Meech Brothers:

"I felt intangible but very personal connections with other numbers by The Muttonbirds and Dave Dobbyn, that is Don McGlashan’s 'Anchor Me' and Dobbyn’s 'Belltower'". – William Dart, Radio NZ on Brown Owl

"These are good rootsy pop songs, and the obvious thing would have been to arrange them for conventionally rootsy instrumentation. But the approach they have taken, using drum machines, touches of synth and electronics etc., is much better. It makes for a much fresher and more surprising record, one that stands out." – Nick Bollinger on Lost at Sea

"The album is a real grower, a testament to the strong songwriting of these brothers who might well become part of the long tradition of famous Kiwi musical siblings". – NZ Musician on poco
