Dreamy, ethereal verses with a melancholic undertone of longing, expand into powerful, strong, and impactful choruses. Robinson’s skill for crafting hook-laden pop songs with a strong emotional depth is on full display in Regardless; also once again demonstrating the undeniable bond, love, and songwriting / producer partnership of Robinson and frequent collaborator Charles Macdonald.
“As a songwriter, I want to write about everything that’s deeply seen and felt within my heart and within my perspective of the world around me,” reflects Robinson. “Charles and I wrote it when we were in London and we both had covid; we were literally barricaded in our bedroom whilst our flatmates brought us food… we put on all our favourite moody lights and created the most magical atmosphere. From there, the words fell out of our hearts and into this song.”
“Regardless dives into the deep tenderness I feel for my love, and is me expressing how it felt when I met my soulmate - which I feel is such a beautiful thing to share with the world,” she says. “Creating a song with each other, about each other, felt so very special.”
Made with support from NZ On Air, Regardless was not only co-written by the duo but also co-produced, before being mixed in Los Angeles by Erik Madrid and mastered by Chris Gehringer.
“I grew up listening to so much sad music, that I wanted the verses to carry that weight whilst the chorus allows it to be more open, free and hopeful… kind of like surrendering to the feeling,” Robinson says. “We then wanted to produce it in a way that gave weight to that emotion.”
Today’s single is the last track to be released before Robinson’s forthcoming EP is out on November 10. Regardless follows the euphoric anthem Nirvana, the soaring single Things Aren’t Nice In Paradise, the absolute bop Oblivion and the irresistibly catchy Teenage Renegade. All three singles have racked up hundreds of thousands of streams on Spotify alone, with the latter already reaching over 1.5 million. Most recently, Things Aren’t Nice In Paradise hit #1 on the Hot 20 NZ Singles Chart, as well as reaching #9 on the NZ Shazam chart.
