Re:ruby (pronounced ‘regarding Ruby’) is the solo recording project of Ruby Hawthorne. Currently based in Pōneke, Ruby draws heavily from their upbringing amongst the DIY scene in Ōtepoti through their intricate and contemplative songwriting. Primarily writing songs influenced by indie folk and singer-songwriter acts, their interest in alternative and experimental production styles often transports these to new, textural soundscapes.
Created at Massey University in 2022, Unearthed & Obsolete: Recordings from the Akai GX-4000DB is their debut project, recorded predominantly using a reel-to-reel tape machine from the late 70s. Taking inspiration from the process of repairing this machine, Ruby wrote the songs about the tape machine’s lifespan as it went from a beloved home audio product, to an outmoded relic of the past, then back to a sought- after piece of technology with the rise of “lo-fi” production stylings today. The album is released today through Home Alone Records.
