Mel Parsons unveils stunning new single and video, 'Offer Down'

The award-winning Mel Parsons has today released her new single and video Offer Down. The stunning track is the first single from Mel Parsons’ forthcoming record, to be released in 2024.

Parsons’ indie-folk sensibilities are on full display in Offer Down, with the track locking into a steady and natural groove, matched with an honest lyrical take on being an independent musician.

Offer Down had been kicking around for a while; the lyrical idea was a bit of a view into the slog behind the scenes and the idea that the overnight success is usually preceded by a lot of rejection and persistence,” says Parsons.

Recorded in Ōhinehou / Lyttelton at Basement Studio, Offer Down is the first single from a collaboration between Parsons and producer Josh Logan, who between them play all the instruments on the song.

“It’s fun to play live and I think that always bodes well for songs heading out into the world,” says Parsons.

Also out today is the accompanying video. Shot in Lyttelton, above Magazine Bay and Corsair Bay, the visuals elicit a “bit of a creepy feeling”, intentionally matching the slightly jaunty vibe of the track.

Parsons’ will soon be heading off on tour supporting Melbourne act The Teskey Brothers, as they travel New Zealand celebrating the release of their new album The Winding Way. Kicking off at the Auckland Town Hall on December 7 and 8, Parsons’ will then be joining them for two shows at the Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington on December 9 and 10, before wrapping up at the Christchurch Town Hall on December 12.

Parsons’ upcoming record follows on from her fifth and critically acclaimed album Slow Burn, which debuted at #3 in the Official Top 40 album charts and #2 in the Top 20 NZ album charts. Previous to Slow Burn was the album Glass Heart, which saw her win Best Folk Artist / Te Kaipuoro Taketake Toa at the 2020 Aotearoa Music Awards. Glass Heart was also a finalist for the 2019 Taite Music Prize and Top 20 finalist at 2019’s APRA Silver Scroll Award.
