Tāmaki Makaurau's Jupita delivers new EP 'Want You Back' - five tracks of heartfelt indie pop

17 November 2023 - 0 Comments

Jupita is the musical project of Julia Morris (she/her), a songwriter and producer from Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) who is currently based in London.

Jupita makes indie pop from the heart, with nostalgic nods to radio and music television from the early 2000's. Her lyrics are hyper personal, examining the highs and lows of self discovery in one's early twenties.

For the past year Jupita has been teasing singles (Anxiety, Ur So Annoying, Want You Back) and today she's excited to release the full five tracks of Want You Back EP in it's entirety. To celebrate she'll perform tonight in Tāmaki Makaurau in at Whammy Backroom. There area a small amount of tickets remaining at Undertheradar.co.nz - grab one before they're gone!

Jupita transforms spontaneous guitar chords strummed from the comfort of her bed, along with words gathered over the week in her phone's Notes app, into jubilant pop hooks that carry just a touch of melancholy. Lyrically she plays with themes of indecisiveness and confusion but Morris puts it simply “it's a break up EP through and through.”

“I wanted the EP to sound kind of nostalgic. I looooove pop music so chorusey guitars, long synths, punchy snares so that's all in there somewhere. Sometimes I'm not really sure where my music fits, but I like it!”

While Jupita is a solo project, the songs on Want You Back were born out of collaborative writing sessions at APRA AMCOS’ SongHubs and NZoA New Music Development initiative. Want You Back was produced by Levi Patel (Alayna, Gala George), with additional songwriting and production provided by Julia’s twin sister Maude Minnie Morris (Lips, Isla Noon). Co-writing credits throughout the EP include Justyn Pilbrow (Elemeno P, Chelsea Jade), Josh Naley (Wells*), Ash Wallace (Foley), Camila Nunez (Amilia), Abby Knudson (Missy), James Mac (Beachware) and Mona Sanei (CHAII). “I had never really collaboratively written songs but would love to more! It's fun being in a room with another brain. I feel like it enhances my own and the songs get taken to places they wouldn't if I were alone.”

Reflecting on the EP Morris notes that “ever since I decided I wanted to release music as a solo artist in 2020, I have been wanting to release music. Lockdowns, mental health, moving countries made it hard for me to make it happen. Now that it's here I feel a real sense of achievement and I'm a little proud of myself for finally just doing it instead of talking about it!”
