Quickly ascending Māori artist, songwriter and producer Aubrie Mitchell releases her latest single, the witty and retrospective track Just So Lame.

A lush synth bass is paired with sparse, percussive production; the artists’ signature stacked vocals creating a lightness in the chorus for moments of depth and juxtaposition. Aubrie’s songwriting capabilities are on full display, as she explores post-breakup feelings and offers a unique perspective into the mind of someone who feels they have moved on “and can now see where the problems were in the relationship.”
“The vibe of the track is geared towards empowering those who might feel hard done by in their relationships and need a little pick me up when they’re down in the dumps about their love life,” explains Aubrie (Ngāti Raukawa).
Produced entirely herself, the single was then mixed by industry heavyweight Jeremie Inhabler (Megan Trainer, Post Malone, Glass Animals) and mastered by the legend, Chris Gehringer (Dua Lipa, Drake, Ed Sheeran) at Sterling Sound in New Jersey.
“I recorded it on my bed, then finished it up in my home studio and later on at Big Fan,” says Aubrie. “This was the first song I recorded when I got my SM7b mic and I remember being so excited that I just plugged it in and hit record. The song came to me very quickly and I had the whole demo down in half an hour.”
Aubrie has made a huge splash in the Aotearoa music scene, releasing her debut single Secret late last year, which right out the gate was featured on Spotify’s ‘Fresh Finds’ - a playlist with over one million followers. Evergreen followed, cementing her local status with coverage on the Student Radio Network across the country.
The huge success of her 2024 debut makes sense for a multi-talented artist like Aubrie, who has already proved her songwriting and production chops by collaborating with the likes of alayna, Troy Kingi, TEEKS, CHAII and Louis Baker.
The 22-year-old triple threat has been making waves in Auckland’s tight knit music community for some time, working as a producer and engineer at Big Fan for the past 18 months. Prior to Big Fan, Aubrie completed a music degree, majoring in classical theory and music production at Auckland University.
Today’s release showcases yet another side to the talented artist-producer, with Aubrie explaining that it’s “definitely a different pop sound that I haven’t explored yet. It’s an open door to a whole lot of other songs I’m excited to share!”
