In the wake of their acclaimed 2022 debut album Love Boredom Bicycles, released on Ivy League Records, Bakers Eddy have been headlining shows across the ditch and touring alongside the likes of Maggie Lindemann, Stand Atlantic, WAAX and Grandson. Manners Street is the first taste of music from their forthcoming EP I’m Doing Better, which is set for release mid-year.
Their compelling and undeniably electric live shows have seen them win over audiences wherever they go, and as a result they have cultivated a dedicated and deeply connected community of fans. However the time spent in Australia has got the band reflective about feeling the need to reconnect with their own roots here in Aotearoa; and so after many identity-shaping writing sessions and meaningful conversations, Manners Street came about.
“Manners Street is almost a tribute to OUR Wellington, the one we grew up in, our experiences, our people and the places,” explain the band. “The four of us spent a long time last year re-connecting with each other and one of the things that came out as a result was this shared feeling of being a little lost in ourselves and who we are. Writing Manners Street felt like a way to reconnect from far away, not only with our memories but with that part of ourselves that was missing.”
Self-produced alongside Vincent McIntyre (Fan Girl, Mr Industry, Elizabeth M. Drummond), the single was then mixed by Justin Gerrish (Vampire Weekend, The Strokes, Weezer) and mastered by Emily Lazar (Foo Fighters, Coldplay, Sia).
“The song is also special to us because all four of us are connected lyrically to it,” says Bakers Eddy. “They’re our shared stories and memories (aside from the parking lot one, that's just for me), so in a way it's the most “Bakers Eddy” Bakers Eddy song we’ve made so far.”
Bakers Eddy is led by charismatic frontman Ciarann Babbington (Ngati Porou Ngati Tuwharetoa), and rounded out by childhood friends Jamie Gordon on drums, and twin brothers Ian and Alex Spagnolo on bass and guitar. Their 2022 debut album Love Boredom Bicycles was met with acclaim, garnering airplay from triple j and community radio alongside glowing reviews from the likes of Rolling Stone AU/NZ and NME, and led to the band gracing the print cover of NZ Musician.
Today marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the band; watch this space!
