Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards 2010: Winners

07 October 2010 - 0 Comments

Gin Wigmore and Stan Walker are the big winners at the 2010 Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards announced in Auckland tonight (Oct. 7). Each scooped up four awards.

Gin collected Tuis for Vodafone Album of the Year, Pacific Blue Breakthrough Artist of the Year, Best Pop Album, and Highest Selling NZ Album.

The wins tops off a stellar year for Gin - Her album Holy Smoke has gone triple platinum, with singles 'Too Late For Lovers', 'Oh My', 'Hey Ho', and 'I Do' all featuring in the NZ top 40 simultaneously.

Stan Walker takes home Tuis for Highest Selling NZ Single, NZ on Air Airplay Record of the Year, Vodafone People's Choice and International Achievement.

The Phoenix Foundation gathered up the music award for Steinlager Pure Best Group - and add this to three technical awards that the band's album Buffalo won earlier this year.

Kids of 88 takes away the Vodafone Single of the Year Tui, while Tim Van Dammen gets the C4 Best Music Video Tui with his Kids of 88 video for Just a Little Bit.

Dane Rumble was named Best Male Solo Artist, while Anika Moa won the Madza Best Female Solo Artist category.

Rock legends Shihad are honoured for their contribution to New Zealand Music, receiving the New Zealand Herald Legacy Award and an induction into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame.  The band formed in 1988, winning a first New Zealand Music Award for 'Most Promising Group' in 1993.

Tuis also go to:
- Best Urban / Hip Hop Album:  David Dallas - Something Awesome
- Kiwi FM Best Aotearoa Roots Album: Opensouls - Standing in the Rain
- PPNZ Best Rock Album: The Checks - Alice By The Moon
- Best Electronia Album: Bulletproof - Soundtrack To Forever
- Best Gospel / Christian Album:  Edwin Derricutt - Three Hours South
- Best Classical Album:  Simon O'Neill - Father & Son: Wagner Scenes & Arias.

Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards spokesperson Campbell Smith says the depth and talent of New Zealand music is highlighted with awards going to a wide variety of artists.

"It's fantastic to see such a range of artists celebrated. There is a real breadth and depth in our music, with stars from across all genres, new artists and established acts, all winning Tuis. This is real evidence that New Zealand music is flourishing, growing and constantly evolving.

"It has been a real honour to be able to celebrate Shihad's legacy - they are a truly legendary and trailblazing New Zealand band and they have probably influenced most, if not all, of the other winners and finalists from tonight, musically and professionally. And their latest album proves they're still very much at the top of their game."
