Band & Musician News - theaudience.co.nz partners up with Paper Cranes

theaudience.co.nz partners up with Paper Cranes

02 November 2012 - 0 Comments

Fraser and Naomi Browne, along with Tim and Kristina Roper are the core members of Paper Cranes. And although the names may not be overly familiar, that is set to change after finishing at #1 on theaudience.co.nz for the October chart month.

Paper Cranes have only been together since August 2011, but the Auckland four-piece have managed to garner plenty of fans in that time, and craft some beautiful dreamy folk tunes.

With a last-minute decision to upload their track ‘Little Darling’ to theaudience.co.nz, they hoped the website might push their music out to more people and possibly lead to an opportunity for some radio play.

“It's hard to get radio stations to play a lot of folk [music] so we thought being on theaudience.co.nz might get us a bit more exposure - we had no grand scheme to finish #1,” admits lead singer Fraser.

Despite this, the band worked hard throughout the month and last night (Wednesday 31 October) their efforts were rewarded. With more than 25,000 votes cast throughout the month Paper Cranes became the first band (rather than solo artist) to finish in the #1 position, which sees them secure the NZ On Air ‘Wildcard’ MakingTracks funding.

“Coming number one is simply amazing. There was some pretty serious competition out there and it was a bit of a nail biter,” says Fraser.  “It's also really motivating that enough people voted for us to get us to the top. We really love the music we make and it's nice to know there are a few others out there who do too!”

Paper Cranes is the fifth recipient of the NZ On Air ‘Wild Card’ Making Tracks grant, finishing in the #1 position at midnight on 31 October. Their song ‘Little Darling’ was the most popular unreleased track on the Wildcard Chart for the month of October on theaudience.co.nz, and you can listen to their winning track here.

As with the previous months, announcing the funding also marks the beginning of a new chart month on theaudience.co.nz and the last NZ on Air funding round for 2012. Who will be the next to be discovered - head to theaudience.co.nz and have your say.
