One Spirit is the first, brand new track to be unleashed from Unitone HiFi since 2010’s cumbia laced remix, Hang On. Returning to the dubwise deviancy that has always been at their core One Spirit is a strident statement of unity amidst a world that is tearing apart at the seams. Riding a creeping carnival-esque organ and cutting strange and beguiling melodic shapes, this is sure to be amongst the highlights when they return to the stage for Laneway 2018.
New Zealand reggaematical pioneers Unitone HiFi emerged in the early 90's from the fertile breeding ground of Auckland’s burgeoning electronic scene. Working between studio locations in Auckland and New York City and signed to German label Incoming!, Unitone HiFi produced truly outernational, forward looking music. Their debut full length album Wickedness Increased was released in 1995 and was quickly followed by its successor, the companion album of remixes, Rewound & Rerubbed (featuring a top shelf of simpatico sonic souls like Funki Porcini, Muslim Gauze and Spectre). In 1996 they released the 4-track Foxy Frotter EP and sophomore album Boomshot. After touring extensively throughout Europe and New Zealand they called time in 1998.
However since 2008 they have kept sporadically recording, working with a number of vocalists and flinging down remixes and tracks for the likes of Overproof SoundSystem and Miami cumbia producer K.E.N. as well as local luminaries including Hirini Melbourne & Richard Nunns, Witi Ihimaera and Coco Solid. 25 years on from when they first emerged as unwitting trailblazers, and two decades since their last full live appearance Unitone HiFi have elected to step out of the shadows with the release of One Spirit and an upcoming performance at Laneway 2018, heralding a new era of uncommon activity!
