Hot off the heels of her headlining performance at this year’s Waiheke Jazz Festival, the enigmatic Lou’ana returns with new single Summer In May, accompanied by a self-directed music video with cinematography by Nina Wells.
Summer In May sees Lou’ana letting go of earthly worries and cares, and surrendering to the exhilaration of romance in this sun-drenched summertime daydream.

Oozing blues and jazz sophistication, Lou’ana’s enrapturing vocal delivery soars throughout this upbeat track as evocative strings provide the backdrop for her alluring tale of newfound love. There is an essence of palpable lustre woven into the music; the kind of magic that is only brought forth when a voice of this calibre meets elegant, assured songwriting.
The accompanying music video weaves nostalgia into Lou’ana’s shimmering vision, as she is seen coasting in an open-top convertible under clear, blue skies. Glints of sunlight form a sun-soaked mirage as Lou’ana dances amongst lush greenery, becoming one with the psychedelic trick of light.
As Lou’ana explains; “Love can enchant your eyes to see the world as a mystical garden, lit up by the rays of Summer sun. It casts a spell on you, taking you on a "trip" away - a trip to pack your bags, or maybe a trip to psychedelia. Either way, "we only got one lucky ticket around the sun" - let go, enjoy the trip & indulge in the gift of enchantment love can serve up.”
Lou’ana’s first single Eye To Eye released in early 2019 received love from a number of online blogs, with Muzic.net.nz praising it as “Warm and sweet like honey, with a maturity and uniqueness which will turn a few heads. Eye To Eye exceeds the boundaries of a five star rating.”.This was followed by yet another showstopper, Move Along, the video for which was co-directed by Nina Wells and premiered on RNZ.
Having performed all around New Zealand as part of the inimitable funk troup Hipstamatics, Lou’ana has played a multitude of festivals across the country and supported a number of New Zealand jazz acts including Andrew Faleatua at Samoana Jazz Festival and the 2015 Pacific Music Awards, as well as providing live vocals for kiwi electronic outfit Sola Rosa.
“Her smokey intonation and back on the beat phrasing carry echoes of Amy Winehouse. Out of this brew comes a sound that is recognisably her own and it is refreshing to see how comfortable she is with that.” - Jazz Local 32.
