RAP is defined as a form of Poetry. It can be to a beat, or accapella.
Its a Music genre like any other.
Some people admire it, some don't. Everyone has an opinion on all sorts of things in life; in this case, the topic is Rap genre.

I believe that Rap artists, like any other music artists, want to get their word out; whether its a message they want to send to others in a positive way or not, or they just want to get their thoughts and feelings out there in the atmosphere.
They will reach those who can relate to the words or/and the beat.
Its a nice feeling to know that if the message in the music positively connects with someone, then that artist has done their job as an artist. If the music brings a negative action or reaction to someone, at the end of the day, its that persons choice.
I'd also like to note that Rap, the way its composed, is not nearly as easy as it might sound. It is very much an art.
The style of rap can invite people in or do the total opposite.
In my opinion, a good style, like Snoop Dogg is almost hypnotic, he's got some groove and awesome flow to his music. Other Artists sound like they are shouting the words, which kind of hurts my ears so I tend to stay away from listening to those sorta songs.

To Rap, Thank you for making a contribution to the beautiful language I call Music

To add to Titahi_bayb's beautiful comments I'd also like to say that a lot of the opinions expressed here are only looking at one very specific sub-genre of rap i.e. gangsta. Like all forms of music, rap and hip hop have several different sub-genre's. And also like all other forms of music it seems wrong to judge an entire genre based on 1 element. It would be like saying that all metal is negative, whiny and generally depressing when in fact only death metal falls into that category. We all know that some metal is energetic and uplifting.

I can see why people don't like gangsta rap. It is sexist, racist and generally derogatory towards people....which is ironic because this is how some people would describe certain types of metal/rock music.

Gangsta rap also tends to be pretty talentless but we also know that there are some really talented hiphop artists even in NZ. And no Scribe is not one of these artists, as catchy as his rhymes and rhythms are he is full of it! He's right though, I didn't grow up on the streets where he lived but I know of people who have had extremely bad upbringings that don't feel the need to brag and cash in on it.

Let's concentrate on some of the better hiphop artists in NZ:

Che Fu
DLT
P-Money
King Kapisi

Just reading over all these comments everyone has put on this thread makes me laugh... personally, no, rap music is not something I listen to, nor enjoy listening to very much. However, I at least have the decency and courtesy to accept that there are millions of people out there who get their inspiration, hopes and dreams from rap.
I agree, it is an art form and is not as easy as it looks, and thats great. But no matter what your preferred genre of music is, there will always be critics and people who don't like/agree with it. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions (as most of you know apparently), but is this really something worth arguing about? Just accept that not everyone is going to like what you like, wear what you wear and agree with you on everything etc. That way we can all get through life without stopping every 5 minutes to prove a point.

all i say is.......yay!!!.....hallelujah for rap and hip hop!!
I love all types of music such as rock, punk, retro funk, and admittedly....even pop....but i don't go round dogging music genre's that i find repulsive....Im not a big fan of nu metal but have found that thousands have 'bathed' in their music that i cant figure out what theyre singing or screaming about...

about the kanye west thing?!?!.......i find j.w's as the most annoying group of ppl ever!! an being related to some is a real b*tch....but how can you ever compare west to a pain in the ass?!??! he may sing about jesus but if you listen his song questions why everything else in this world gets equal mention but religion or jesus. We hear of sex, paedophilia/kiddie porn, gangs, P, 34DD tits, trannies, beatings, fraud and cant even handle lyrics talkin bout jesus?!?

as for cashin in on being brought up poorly....big ups to Scribe and whoever else that finds their market.....he must be doing something right if ppl are willing to part with their perhaps hard earned cash to buy his music....

I think the New Zealand hip hop scene is finally blowing up and even tho there are a few that may not be 'keepin it real' by mirroring what black rap artists portray in their clips I dont think we should be knockin what New Zealand musicians/artists/singers/rappers are doin by putting their a** out there

Hey if you don't like rap thats your opinion and your entitled but........
that don't mean you can start dissing rap music and rap isn't about guys that can't play instruments FYI music doesn't always have to involve instruments rap is simply words that rhyme put into a tune but said very fast DAH Not all raps are sexist or racist how bout that song that came out in 19 something about notorious b.i.g it was called I'll be missing you it had words in there that were nice and in remeberence of him if you know who he was i know he isn't from nz but still I'm just trying to say that all raps aren't bad it can be about expressing yourself, hard times and many other thing that have to do with the artist or it might not but still you shouldn't be dissind people just because of what kind of music they like me personally i don't like rock or punk or whteva you guys call it but still i aint dissin you. FAST CREW is a perfect example they rap and i like there music and rap does not suk. Oh yea..... you have'nt herd all kinds of raps so before dissing it i suggest you listen to all kinds of raps and if you still thinks it sucks then thats your problem
SO RAP DOES NOT SUCK NA AH No, No! No, No! No, No!
