RE: Bring Back Guitar Solos!! Posted: Tue Jun 14, 2005 3:53 pm Too many influences to name all but.. Ritchie Blackmore.. in both Deep Purple and Rainbow, have you guys heard much of his playing?,such an inovative player for his day, early Rainbow with Ronnie James Dio on vocals started the whole Medievil metal thing really, his work with Purple like Burn,Child in Time etc... too, so underated in my book. Others players... Jimmy Page Joe Satriani Steve Vai David Gilmour Peter Frampton Eddie Van Halen Stevie Ray Vaughan Hendrix etc.. there's heaps more, like the other dudes on your guys lists. Being a guitar teacher i've played most stuff, even Dream Theatre etc.. i dig the Images and Words album. Anyway, I'd be keen as to hook up and do gigs with you guy's some time, my band 8Forty8 is the only real classic rock band in Hamilton and it's hard to find other suitable bands to gig with, we're real keen to get out and play in other centres. |

RE: Bring Back Guitar Solos!! Posted: Wed Jun 15, 2005 11:09 am I'm not a guitar player at all, but I know what I like, and I wonder if either have you have ever heard of a guy called James Wilkinson. He lives in Chch, does alot of stuff with a band called Rua - celticy stuff I think. But I listened to him play about 2 weeks ago, and he just blew me away. Lovely jubbly! |

RE: Bring Back Guitar Solos!! Posted: Wed Jun 15, 2005 11:32 am No can't say i have, i'll have to see if he's on the net anywhere. Speaking of Acoustic players, i recently saw a Tommy Emmanuel video, just him and an acoustic guitar, my god that dude can play, i always new he was good but i was completely blown away when i saw this, his version of classical gas was truely incredible and his arrangements of the Beatles classics day Tripper and Lady Madonna with the bass lines and melody parts going at the same time is just too good. |

RE: Bring Back Guitar Solos!! Posted: Thu Jun 16, 2005 8:53 am Yeah Tommy Emmanuel rocks. Saw him at a guitar clinic a few years back. He definitely has some serious chops. Can't say I've heard of James Wilkinson but sounds cool, will see if I can find out anything about him. Quote:kiwi rock music needs surport and we need to surport each other. before rubbish music that chokes the nz airways takes total control..i thing this site should be used for us to hook up and get together in each others towns for gigs Personally I like a lot of the 'rubbish music' nz is producing at the moment but also think the whole velvet revolver thing is cool. If ya get up to Auckland drop me a line Keat we'd be into doing a gig with ya. |

RE: Bring Back Guitar Solos!! Posted: Fri Jun 17, 2005 4:49 pm i was referring to dribble that doesn't take a musicial instrument to play it. ya know crap that uses other peoples music from the past, running it thru a sampler and calling it new. i ain't no metal head, tho i was 20 years ago. i'm playing rock music ala ac/dc and GnR style rock. but i'd say i'm more a blues guitarist. but then when it comes to writing my own sh*t, i'm more drawn to the piano, or a full string section. if i could drag the muso's together i'd record my own music with in the satyle of Ray Charles new Duets record. so i guess no one can really be pegged. two Sh*t i don't like at all scribe, omc |

RE: Bring Back Guitar Solos!! Posted: Fri Jun 17, 2005 6:40 pm You two both had Randy Rhoads as one of your main influences, my band plays a mixture of classic covers and originals and do the Ozzy song Bark at The Moon, i dig Jake e Lee's playing on that, how would you guys rate it? |

RE: Bring Back Guitar Solos!! Posted: Fri Jun 17, 2005 7:59 pm Mr Wilkinson is a fine guitarist, and also impresses on Fretless Bass. Probably his stuff with Rua would be a good place to start. Has done some work here in Chch with Flip Grater, but I dont know if that included Recording sessions. Latest thing of his was with M.Tocker, i think. His Acoustic slot at Arnie van Bussel's 50th Birthday Bash was a corker, and if he's on the same bill as a Guitarist named John Hooker, check em out because they play off each other very well indeed. Chops, but Taste, you know... an elusive combo at times. Now Hand Grips at 20 Paces, my 2 cents is Al di Meola. |

RE: Bring Back Guitar Solos!! Posted: Sat Jun 18, 2005 7:20 pm Quote:i dig Jake e Lee's playing on that, how would you guys rate it?Jake E Lee rocks on the Ozzy stuff! I also liked what he did with Badlands (though I think the production is a little too sterile on Badlands, considering it was meant to be a 70's retro type of band). I've got a recording of Jake and Glenn Hughes covering Queen's 'Get down make love' wicked guitar playing on that. Quote:Now Hand Grips at 20 Paces, my 2 cents is Al di Meola.Hey Mr Foal, gotta agree Al DiMeola kicks ass. Was using Phrygian Dominant before Satriani gave it that name (still called Spanish Prhygian to those who wished to talk bout it), easily as fast as Yngwie, probably faster- pretty stunning when you consider Yngwie sweep picks to do what Al does intensively, alternate picking every note. But besides that, just beautiful sense of phrasing and overall dynamic. Of course can't forget when talking damn fine Christchurch (and for that matter nz) musicians you gotta mention the equus crew |

RE: Bring Back Guitar Solos!! Posted: Sun Jun 19, 2005 10:10 am Yes, i have a few of Al DiMeola's albums, he was the first shredder i ever heard, it was the Live Album, heard that just before Malmsteen's Trilogy Suite, still my favourite Malmsteen instrumental. All that stuff was a real eye opener to me of what was possible on the guitar. Mr Ishtar you mentioned Badlands, i love the first album, think Ray Gillen was an amazing singer, what a loss. Also dig Jake's playing on that stuff, definately hear a bit of Page and Blackmore influence coming through there as there was the Coverdale and Plant with Gillen. |

RE: Bring Back Guitar Solos!! Posted: Sun Jun 19, 2005 7:14 pm Yes, Eruption is great. Have you heard his acoustic guitar solo off VH2 called Spanish Fly, that's wicked too. I have way too many favourite solos to name them all. |
