RE: Why are some people in bands such wankers? Posted: Thu May 29, 2008 1:17 am oh and one more thing i forgot is that i have been to many gigs where i hadn't heard some of the bands on the line up and have been totally been blown away by them. i wasnt there to see them, probably coz they were supporting sum1 or a good example is BDO. afterwards i feel enlightened that iv added to my musical wealth and go on to support this other band. many bands have become famous by supporting bigger acts in their early days and some go on to be bigger than the act they used to open for. this has nothing to do with advertising or wankery of musicians just thought it was an interesting point |

RE: Why are some people in bands such wankers? Posted: Thu May 29, 2008 3:22 pm Heh, the singer of ELEMENOP had it sorted... HYPE He talked up his band, kept the mention rolling out to as many people as possible, even though they didn't even have a lineup at the time! Eventually when it came to the A&R people, they lapped it up, because they'd been hearing this buzz for so long. But that's after years and years and years of bands he'd been in that got nowhere. It's just getting that word out and hoping eventually it falls on the right ears. Oh, and knowing people in the biz defiantely is a foot in the door. |

RE: Why are some people in bands such wankers? Posted: Thu May 29, 2008 6:05 pm yeah totally, Hype is a huge part in it- If your band is a tree you don't want to be quietly planted in the forest to mangle a metaphor.. Shuzbut you perplex me a little dude, seems you're more a NZmusic.com kind of guy? I swear I'm even seeing the upside down exclamation marks Lena O used to post over everything in there somewhere. I kinda am not surprised you found us a little flat if Bjork is your bag, I dare say most people who support us find Bjork really not to their tastes. I Did a scientific survey and apparently everyone and their grandmother think we're great so I'm keeping the 'one of Auckland's best acts" bit in... That said a few of my 'friends' said we're arse (Thank you Iron Pete- You suck dogs balls my friend) Baphomet you're pushing a hobby horse of mine I almost don't wanna jump on at the moment, seeing I've gotta be at my brother's in half an hour ... suffice to say your comments on humility reflects a side of the NZ psyche that bugs me almost as much as NZs dislike for Cherry coke and satay chicken- Why is it NZ cannot accept the people it should enshrine as heroes are often not the best people to be role models? The two IMO are different things entirely .... Make a list of household names + cross off the ones who are in some way damaged, crazy, odd or plain offensive ... chances are you won't have a terribly long list. |

RE: Why are some people in bands such wankers? Posted: Sat May 31, 2008 12:21 am Your argument is riddled with contradiction and inconsistencies. Bands start out endeavoring to have an audience in a shitty student bar before even thinking about “making it”. If bands go about getting numbers in by “stretching the truth”, they are being smart and are simply believing in their music. They certainly aren’t being 'wankers'. It’s also not to say they have delusions of grandeur. They’ve created something; they want others to appreciate it as much as they do. If you go to a gig expecting a band that is so good that it is 'taking the underground kiwi rock scene by storm', and you decide they are not as good as the website said, do not assume that everyone else thinks so. Let me level with you, I am sorry you didn’t make it as a musician. Perhaps your marketing tactics went awry when you were so honest about your music? |

RE: Why are some people in bands such wankers? Posted: Fri Jun 6, 2008 11:19 am Hi Crossie, Quote:If bands go about getting numbers in by “stretching the truth”, they are being smart and are simply believing in their music. They certainly aren’t being 'wankers'.There's some merit to that, the truth is the truth no matter what kind of shop front you put on it. But my point's really about acts who write all out bollocks about themselves. I just don't think they're doing themselves any favours. Quote:If you go to a gig expecting a band that is so good that it is 'taking the underground kiwi rock scene by storm', and you decide they are not as good as the website said, do not assume that everyone else thinks so.Also true but I've been to gigs where everyone has thought the band sucks There's no getting away from the fact that someone is rubbish or not. But like you say, it's really up the individual to decide for themselves. I'm just sharing an opinion. Quote:Let me level with you, I am sorry you didn’t make it as a musician. Perhaps your marketing tactics went awry when you were so honest about your music? It's actually been ok. I've played some big crowds in various venues, festivals etc. I wouldn't say I'm 'known' but I used to make a living out of music, mostly from being a hired gun for a number of years. Never had someone come up to me and say 'you are s*h*i*t!'. Can't say the same for some of the bands I've been in though. |
