RE: Best Guitarist Ever..? Posted: Thu Mar 24, 2005 12:35 am Everybody has their own opinions but heres what i reckon are the best ever guitarists Michael Angelo Steve Vai Joe Satriani Yngwie Malmsteen Slash Kirk Hammet Zakk Wylde It seems hardly anyone has mentioned Michael Angelo. This is probably because you have never heard him play. I think he can play better left handed than most of these guitarists mentioned can play right handed, and he isn't left handed! Not to mention he can play with both hands at once. When you see him playing his double guitar you'll see what i mean. Anyhow, he would have to be the fastest guitar player in the world and you should really check it out. This message was edited by shredgtar on Thu Mar 24, 2005 12:43 am. |

RE: Best Guitarist Ever..? Posted: Thu Mar 24, 2005 10:29 am I think that bugger all people have heard of Michael Angelo because he's never played anything memorable, i've seen him play on video and think he's nothing more than a gimmick! To me he's one of those guys who could play a thousand notes and yet say nothing. |

RE: Best Guitarist Ever..? Posted: Thu Mar 24, 2005 10:57 am The eternal problem between best and greatest If you are looking for 'Best' you could put together a series of minimum requirements Can each guitarist play eruption?, next! Far beyond the sun? Ok, now who can play this lick to a mteronome to a certain speed? Tap with all eight fingers? play this phrase in octaves? etc It becomes a test of the guitarist's athleticism. Slash wouldn't have made the cut, by a long long way, neither would Munky or Head from Korn, Hammet might last a while but would not make the top twenty. Janick Gers and Dave Murray would be laughed at for being so stupid as to show up in the first place. Unfortunately this would not give you the greatest guitarist as that title requires other attributes ie being a major influence on how others play taste (phrasing) innovation with effects or other devices. Over all these attributes Steve Vai would rate highly but has not spawned a million imitators (and in not likely to be fastest in any given category) John Petrucci is technically brilliant but a pastiche of many other styles- the cynic finds it hard to think of anything he contributed to music's lexicon. Eddie Van Halen would generally rate highly but on a technical level loses out to some of the heavy weights in his lead work. Counter balance with his astounding, but not often talked about rhythm guitar skills though he could just be a contender. Slash is high on influence and phrasing but shouldn't really be on the list being only an average guitar player. Yngwie would only average to about the same place as slash. Before anyone says but he is so fast... no he isn't His tops speed is estimated at 16 notes per second. Compare to John Petrucci's 28 Nps, Nz's own Simon_ishtar's 30 nps or Michael Angelo's 32 nps all he can really lay claim to is starting a minor craze in copying violin players. Do you add ace frehley for getting thousands of angst ridden seattleites to play the gat in the 90s, despite him being a ham fisted jerk? Can you judge Hendrix for being born too early? He was a million miles ahead of Pete Townshend, Keith Richards and George Harrison Woohoo! so is Grandma Cynic. Page is messy but on all other levels a genius. Randy Rhoads, does one fall into the whole 'If only he lived longer scanario? Michael Schenker- Slash with monster chops. And this is ignoring all the monster players who weren't/aren't playing rock. How can you judge Al DiMeola, Paco Di Lucia or John Williams against Vai, Hammett or Hendrix? |

RE: Best Guitarist Ever..? Posted: Thu Mar 24, 2005 3:50 pm Quote:and whats so great about jimmy hendrix, sure he's pretty good, but there are so many out there better than him !Wasn't his technical ability that made Jimi great... or even the best... it was innovation. No one had played the guitar like that before he was way ahead of his time. Now Jimi's style is the basis for pretty much all rock guitar solos. |

RE: Best Guitarist Ever..? Posted: Thu Mar 24, 2005 9:25 pm Malmsteen pretty much ripped off Ritchie Blackmore's style, he's the guy who started the whole neo-classical style although that was only one aspect of his playing. Check out some of his work on the early Rainbow stuff with Ronnie James Dio singing, Gates of Babylon , Kill the King, Stargazer etc... Ritchie is thee most under rated guitarist, he is so much more influential than most people realize, after all he did write the most recognizable riff of all time! |

RE: Best Guitarist Ever..? Posted: Fri Mar 25, 2005 1:54 pm Another thing, in response to Thomas j Cynic saying that Malmsteen isn't a fast player i disagree, listen to the studio recording of "Trilogy Suite" the Acoustic shred at around 2min49 and the Electric run at 5min10-5.13 is absolutely hauling ass. I saw Malmsteen live in 99 and the man's a machine. Also the notes per second stuff Thomas was talking about, does he mean trem picking on 1 note? or 16-32 different notes? or some notes played twice or 3 times? this of course would have a huge bearing on how many notes you could fit it. Anyhow, i'd rather hear Dave Gilmour play 1 note. |

RE: Best Guitarist Ever..? Posted: Sat Mar 26, 2005 10:06 am different notes. The Cynic is told some university types did a study of several guitarists fastest licks and Malmsteen only comes in at about 16 notes a second, that is with going up and down arpeggios. The cynic admits he cannot do 16 a second, which is still quite fast. but when you've got guitaqrists out there who are doing double that I think it brings Malmsteen's whole claim to fame into question. With Simon from Ishtar I've seen him pacing himself against a metronome going up and down scales, six notes per click(24 per bar in 4 time whatever the terminology for that is) at 208 bpm. He worked out it equals around 30 notes per second. He can pick every single note well up into the 190s too. |
