SKANKIN 2006

Beatboy Productions welcomes to New Zealand, from the UK and Jamaica, two bands that define SKA music

NEVILLE STAPLE’S SPECIALS

One of the undisputed forerunners of the ska movement will be arriving in New Zealand for the first time ever, with his five-piece band, for two dates in April 06.

Best known as lead singer of THE SPECIALS and one of the founding members of FUN BOY THREE, Neville Staple is credited with changing the face of popular music. His biography and past projects read like a who's who of rock, seeing him work with industry legends Elvis Costello, Talking Head's David Byrne, and UB40's Ali Campbell.

Leading the 2-Tone charge of the ska revival in 1979, THE SPECIALS were a band that during the dark 'Thatcher Years' helped to create a youth movement that united kids of all colours, at a time when UK society needed it most. The band went on to release six Top Ten hits and two Top Five albums in eighteen months, and the recent bestselling book, ‘1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die’ lists two of THE SPECIALS albums as all time classics. More recently collaborating with Rankin' Roger from THE BEAT to form the ska-collective super group THE SPECIAL BEAT, Neville toured Australia for the first time in August 2005 playing to sold out shows in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Neville Staple and his five-piece band will perform a blistering set of Specials hits and songs from his new album The Rude Boy Returns, which was released in December 2005 and features guest appearances from legendary punk era icons Mick Jones (The Clash) and Rat Scabies (The Damned).

THE SKATALITES

For the first time the original forefathers of Jamaican ska, the Skatalites and their nine-piece band complete with horn/brass section, will be performing two dates in New Zealand this April 2006. The Skatalites were the first house band to reside at Jamaica’s Studio One, where all the famous early reggae and ska hits were recorded, and so as the backing band, they contributed to all these recordings. As a result the Skatalities band in its various forms have written and recorded with names such as Jimmy Cliff, Toots and the Maytals, Peter Tosh, Bob Marley, Sly & Robbie, Bunny Wailer, and guitarist Ernest Raglin. Most releases were first takes; essentially live, and the house band was, by demand, impeccable.

More than a live band, the Skatalites were and are in institution, an aggregation of top-notch musicians who didn’t merely define the sound of Jamaica; they were the sound of Jamaica across the 50’s and 60’s. Al Capone, Guns of Navarone, Phoenix City, Addis Ababa, Silver Dollar, Corner Stone, and Blackberry Brandy, to name just a small handful of their most seminal cuts, not only defined the island's sound, but created a whole new genre of music -- ska. The Skatalites have been quoted as saying their invention of ska music was never intentional, but merely the byproduct of their flawed attempts at American R&B. This self-deprecating explanation neglects the jazz and big band swing sound that was also crucial to ska in its original form, and anyone good enough to play in those styles would have little problem mastering R&B. What the Skatalites actually did was drag these older styles into the contemporary scene, merge it with modern R&B, and propel it into the mainstream via a faster syncopated island beat. With it, the group's musical legacy spread around the world and across generations. The bands latest album 'Skatalites in Orbit: Vol 1', which was recorded live in Argentina in Sept 2005 is available through Real Groovy stores and will be on sale at both the bands NZ shows.

“The Skatalites, are Jamaica’s supreme instrumental band” - BILLBOARD

“In the resurgence of Ska in Britain and the US, and in the rise of various subgenres (Reggae, Dub, Bluebeat)… the Skatalites’ recordings and live performances blow every Ska-Punk/Metal/pick-your-hybrid band to smithereens”http://www.rollingstone.com/

Hey Folks,

Just letting you know we're stoked to be coming over very soon to support such a fantastic foundation pillar of Ska!

After supporting the Special Beat shows in Brisbane and Sydney last year, its great to see Neville bringing both The Specials and Skatalites back down to the southern hemisphere..I'm sure you'll all show your appreciation!

We're also looking forward to seeing our old friends, The Managers after their tour of East-coast Australia not so long ago.

Check out our other New Zealand dates at http://www.rubixcuba.com or http://www.myspace.com/rubixcuba.

Just saw the posters for this going up this morning...

... a DREAM COME TRUE!

I've been waiting for a decent 2 Tone Act to make it out to NZ and had resigned myself to the fact that I may never see anything in this hemisphere.

Sure, it's not the original line up, but Staples is a powerhouse none the less and I can't wait for them to bust out Gangsters, Rat Race and maybe even All Gone Wrong, Bonediggin' and Fantasize if I'm lucky.

And the Skatalites is just a big f***ing bonus.

Now we just need Madness AKA The Dangermen down here and my life will be complete!

//edit:
There aren't any posters for this that didn't make their way to Sticky Fingers that I could have, are there? Happy
