Aotearoa singer-songwriter Georgia Lines is celebrating NZ Music Month with the release of Hine E Hine, out today.

Originally written by Princess Te Rangi Pai (Fanny Howie) in around 1907, Hine E Hine is a Māori lullaby. It’s a deeply emotional ballad, one which Georgia has brought to life through hauntingly beautiful string sections and her stunningly rich, soaring vocals. 2021 saw Georgia perform alongside Annie Crummer, Anika Moa, Paige and Tami Neilson as part of Tuawāhine, a show celebrating Matariki and the power of Wāhine Toa. Each artist chose a waiata reo Māori to perform, with Georgia selecting Hine E Hine.

“The very first time I had heard this song was a few years back in high school when our school choir had learnt this song for a performance,” said Georgia. “So when choosing a song for Tuawāhine, it was the first waiata that came to my mind and something I already had a connection to. Ever since playing the song at Tuawāhine, I have been playing it at most shows since and have wanted to record a version for quite a while.”

“For me, I am always drawn to writing and performing songs that are honest and that I feel some kind of emotional connection to,” Georgia explains further. “With Hine E Hine, this was no different. I feel that sense of emotion and connection to the lyrics and hope that it is captured in the recording.

Recorded at Parachute Studios with Nic Manders, Georgia recently did a breathtaking performance of the song live as a part of her Leave Behind national tour, alongside members of the APO at the Auckland War Memorial Museum.

Georgia Lines is quickly becoming a household name in Aotearoa’s music industry. Her self-titled, debut EP Georgia Lines released in 2020, has amassed 1.5 million Spotify streams, with 2021 release Tōrere already gaining more than 72,000 streams; a track unveiled as part of 2021’s Te Wiki o te Reo Māori. Georgia’s single No One Knows also saw Georgia win Best Music Video at 2021’s AMA’s (Aotearoa Music Awards).

Catch Georgia on her solo tour of New Zealand, which celebrates the release of her recent single Leave Behind. Still to come is Dunedin on May 30, Christchurch on June 1 and Tauranga on June 3.
