Gig & Concert News - KITA East Coast Relief Show, April 2nd at San Fran, Wellington

KITA East Coast Relief Show, April 2nd at San Fran, Wellington

27 March 2023 - 0 Comments

Musicians of Poneke are coming together for the ongoing relief needed on the East Coast.

Although the effects of Cyclone Gabrielle are no longer on headlines every day, they are still very much in need of ongoing support. The rebuild from the devastation will take along time, and require support from all parts of the Country. All proceeds from this concert will be donated to relief in Heretaunga / Hawkes Bay through the Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi as well as distributed through smaller hapu and Marae that are either opening their doors to people volunteering with the rebuild, or marae needing help being rebuilt, as well as other community groups. We are currently in discussion with locals on the ground and we will be targeting areas and people that don't have easy access to help with the money we raise.

Everybody involved in making this event happen from musicians to crew, are donating their time and costs. All the proceeds, after Bank Fees, will be donated to local, on the ground, relief groups.

We will have a band from Heretaunga playing on the bill with us, as well as a couple of locals helping on the ground up there, coming to share their experience on the ground, in-between our acts.

We hope you can join us in giving the East Coast of our motu, some much needed awhi and love.

We have a tiered ticketing system that begins at $30 p/ticket, if you feel you have the ability to pay more for a ticket for the cause, we encourage you to do so.

"The East Coast is often where I go when I'm not touring, it's a place that has looked after me a lot in some of my darkest times, a place I go to volunteer planting at the Native Nursery and where I have been to write music, film and poetry.

It feels right for me to put so much effort into giving back to that region.

It's daunting that just because the East Coast isn't making front headlines any more, that it'll be off people's radars, when they are still in much need of help.

Our main intention is focussing on the areas that have less access to support. People that were already struggling before, who are struggling even more so now.

James from Origin Events who is helping me put on this show, also went up to Heretaunga last week to volunteer, and experienced first hand what is needed up there, and where these funds ought to go.”

Watch The Video: Too Much Of A Good Thing

KITA has been described as a three-headed entity with an expansive sound, despite just being a three piece. This Te Whanganui-a-Tara based trio is fronted by Taiwan-born wāhine Nikita 雅涵 Tu-Bryant who is an award-winning actor, writer, director and poet. Alongside her are her brothers-in-arms Ed Zuccollo (also known as the producer Zuke, with collaborations with Trinity Roots, Rhian Sheehan, and Troy Kingi)- an expert of vintage synthesisers; and backing them on the drums Rick Cranson, a jazz-trained drummer who has been known for his epic work with Little Bushman and The Woods.

Following killer shows at Splore and Womad, KITA have just released Love Lives Here (on AAA Records), working with Grammy-award winning Italy-based Tommaso Colliva (Muse/Razorlight), they have recently been signed to AAA Records (Troy Kingi, French for Rabbits).

MARA TK

The son of Maori psychedelic rock legend Billy TK, Mara TK would first turn heads via his group Electric Wire Hustle. With an ethos that paralleled the likes of groups Sa-Ra Project and Spacek, they defined an era for those searching for something more probing in the purview of underground soul, beats and electronica. It was Mara’s brilliant songwriting and golden voice that often accentuated their impressive output. Stricken fans drawn in would include global tastemakers such as Benji B and Gilles Peterson (BBC), while Okayplayer would give their debut self-titled album a rare five stars. Such attention would spearhead the group to an international audience, establishing a cult following that continues to follow Mara’s work to this day.

WALLACE

Consistently connecting the dots between genres and influences, Wallace’s artistic identity has become uniquely recognisable, with her jazz training and distinct harmonies captivating audiences around the globe. Wallace’s music has been described as a vibrant mosaic of soul, hip-hop and pop.

ARAHI

Arahi has been making waves in the music scene for ages, both at home and around the country. Performing this summer on the mainstage at Outfield Festival, having shared the Black Barn stage with Sir Dave Dobbyn, taking his place amongst the New Zealand greats. Arahi has also played alongside iconic NZ artists; The Veils, Bic Runga, Nadia Reid to a sold out audience at Auckland Stadium's Lilypad concert. His paired back and intimate piano tour, There’s Nothing Like It, offered yet another aspect of this multifaceted artist.

CASUAL HEALING:

Casual Healing with Surfy-Indy-Raga-Hop, Nikau takes it upon himself to offer a Major 7th chord creamy, melancholic dreamy musical experience. A tasteful collection of refreshing original music and hand-plucked covers, you can dance, cry, laugh or dance-cry-laugh to the mellow-musical-mindfulness of Casual Healing.
