Wazzo Clash, Aotearoa's premier Clash tribute band, are playing on Saturday 28 October at St Peters Village Hall in Paekakariki to raise funds for tribal victims of the civil war in Manipur, India.
The band features members of foundational Wellington groups Head Like a Hole, Dead Vicious, and Wazzo Ghoti from whom Wazzo Clash derive their name. The
current line up is comprised of Rex Nairn, Mark Roxburgh, Al Baird-Smith and
Mark Hamil.
A firm favourite on the local scene, the band don't pretend to be The Clash but
capture their essence with an exciting show delivering the songs they way they
were meant to be heard - live.
Punters can expect nothing less than a fist-pumping selection of passionate punk
and rock classics from The Clash' seminal career such as Rock The Casbah,
Should I Stay or Should I Go, Know Your Rights, London Calling, I Fought the
Law, and more.
Event host Helen Keivom who hails from Manipur says the state has been torn
apart by a civil war that began in early May this year. With over 60,000
survivors displaced, most are living in relief camps with no prospect of ever
returning to their burnt down villages.
Proceeds from the event will go to support tribal women and children in the
relief camps in Churachandpur through respected Hmar tribal NGO Rural Women
Upliftment Society.
Keivom says that half the proceeds from her previous fundraiser was received by
RWUS and it paid for urgent medical needs such as ultrasound sound tests for
pregnant women, nutritional supplements, and basics such as buckets and
mosquito nets. "Small treats for the children was met with heartbreaking
joy".
"I am so grateful that Wazzo Clash offered to play a concert for Manipur.
It's also the band's first time in Paekakariki so I hope they get a rousing
welcome on both fronts."
