The Spirals
Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington, Thursday 3 April
Meow Nui
Wellington’s The Spirals were a fixture of the early 90's New Zealand music scene, known for their gritty guitar hooks, big rhythms, saxophone and samples. Relentless gigging earned them opening slots for acts like The Lemonheads, Hunters and Collectors, The Black Crowes, Baby Animals, The Verlaines, Jenny Morris, The Mutton Birds and Sir Dave Dobbyn.
Their high-energy performances left a lasting impression. Frontwoman Belinda Bradley’s powerhouse vocals and unrestrained stage presence earned her a New Zealand Music Award nomination. Their quirky anthem Normal found commercial radio success, and their songs became regulars on student radio.
Reunited after three decades, its members have pursued musical projects like Selon Recliner, 3rd Octave Band, and The Wellington Heads.
Best Bets
Ōtautahi Christchurch, Friday 4 April
James Hay Theatre
Best Bets are a power pop band from Ōtautahi Christchurch. Formed by Olly Crawford Ellis and James Harding (Transistors), and joined by Matt Phimmavanh and Joe Sampson (Salad Boys, T54), the energetic four-piece has gained a reputation for acerbic, witty songs driven by jangly guitar interplay and a propulsive rhythm section.
Their second album The Hollow Husk of Feeling was released in late 2024 to critical acclaim and chart success.
Silk Cut
Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, Saturday 5 April
Powerstation
Silk Cut are "melodic, memorable and really quite beautiful… pure pop for a new generation", says 13th Floor’s Marty Duda.
"We...delight in its old school, power pop familiarity (The Transfer, the Beatlesque Turning the Whole World On, the lyrically pointed Punches), surging energy (Anywhere We Can Drive, Control Option Command) and bristling guitars (Old and Blue)... Eleven songs, no fat", says Graham Reid on Elewhere about their latest (self-titled) album Silk Cut.
Even Nigel Latta is a fan, selecting not one but two Silk Cut tracks on RNZ for his ideal West Coast road trip: Road Trip: Nigel Latta
Live, this Tamaki Makaurau 4-piece deliver, blending sonic psych and indie jangle to serious effect. 2 guitars, bass and drums. Not to be missed.
