Gig & Concert News - Big Day Out 2012 Second Announcement

Big Day Out 2012 Second Announcement

09 November 2011 - 0 Comments

Our goal, as always, is to deliver the best experience possible for everyone, including the artists and the BDO team. This year we have made some changes to ensure our BEST always comes before BIG at all costs.

AUCKLAND /ADELAIDE and PERTH – The original Big Day Out + Boiler Room
4 Stages plus all the bells and whistles

AUCKLAND BIG DAY OUT

As always, the BIG DAY OUT is ever evolving. We continue to support local musicians, DJ’s and artists in every city, making each BIG DAY OUT a unique experience.

It’s not just about bands.  Hitting the custom built 40 foot Big Day Out touring skate ramp will be some of the hottest skaters on the planet right now. There is always more to explore at the Big Day Out.

The Big Day Out prides itself on presenting the best, most outstanding artists in the world, and our second round of acts is no exception.

There are plenty of debut artists joining the BDO circus, from the never compromising Noel Gallagher to the thunderous Nero performing with a full live band for the first time in New Zealand.  From Brazil’s Cavalera Conspiracy to the whacked out world of Das Racist, there are plenty of new pieces to complete the BDO puzzle.

So let’s roll out the second round of artists to complete the picture:

NOEL GALLAGHER’S HIGH FLYING BIRDS
NERO (LIVE)
THE VACCINES
BASSNECTAR
CAVALERA CONSPIRACY
REGURGITATOR
KIMBRA
PARKWAY DRIVE
MIDNIGHT YOUTH
DAS RACIST
SIX60
MT EDEN
THE ADULTS
I AM GIANT
CAIRO KNIFE FIGHT
JAKOB
BULLETPROOF
JUNICA
@PEACE
DJ SIR-VERE
NICK D

For our 20th year we have chosen to rebuild the Auckland event from the ground up, with a goal to recapturing the magic of early Big Day Out shows. We are excited the bands are into the idea and we know you will be too.

One main stage, no D barricade, Skating & Skate stage in the main arena, Green stage, Boiler Room, Show ‘N’ Shine  hot rod show brought to you by OnePercent magazine and much, much more! Plus it’s now a little cheaper than the East Coast Australian Shows, with booking fees included.

However, the need to reduce from two to one main stage means a couple of acts from the first announcement will not be able to perform at the Auckland Big Day Out.

Unfortunately Kanye West and Odd Future will not be appearing at the Auckland event and we thank them for their help, support and understanding in this change of plans.

This means for Auckland it will be:

NOEL GALLAGHER’S HIGH FLYING BIRDS, NERO (LIVE), THE VACCINES, BASSNECTAR, CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, REGURGITATOR, KIMBRA, PARKWAY DRIVE, MIDNIGHT YOUTH, DAS RACIST, SIX60, MT EDEN, THE ADULTS, I AM GIANT, CAIRO KNIFE FIGHT, JAKOB, BULLETPROOF, JUNICA, @PEACE, DJ SIR-VERE and NICK D

Who will now be joining:

SOUNDGARDEN, KASABIAN, MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE, THE LIVING END, BATTLES, GIRL TALK, ROYKSOPP, FOSTER THE PEOPLE, GIN WIGMORE, MARIACHI EL BRONX, CAGE THE ELEPHANT, BEST COAST, BEASTWARS, GHOSTWAVE, CUT OFF YOUR HANDS, DAVID DALLAS, UNKNOWN MORTAL ORCHESTRA & MAYAVANYA.

Plus the Tony Hawk BDO Vert Jam lineup has now been confirmed and we are stoked to announce that joining Tony Hawk will be vertical visionaries: Kevin Staab, Sandro Diaz, Jesse Fritsch and Neal Hendrix.

Of course the full picture is not complete without playing times, which are looking great and will be in your hot little hands soon. We are making them available ASAP and you can build log into http://www.bigdayout.com/ to build your own timetable and share with your friends via Facebook. Current ticket holders in Auckland, you now have a few options:

1.      You are automatically entitled to $20 credit from the show merchandise

2.      For those who prefer not to attend, refunds to current ticket holders will be available from your original outlet up until November 30th 2011

Finally, friend of the Big Day Out, and Master of the aftershow DJ SAMPOLOGY presents an exclusive mashup of artists from the Big Day Out 2012 Series!! Check it out here: http://soundcloud.com/bdo-mash/big-day-out-2nd-announce

Respectfully yours,
Ken West
BDO creator

MORE ON THE SECOND ROUND OF BIG DAY OUT 2012 INDUCTEES:

NOEL GALLAGHER’S HIGH FLYING BIRDS

As the driving force behind Oasis he did everything you can do in music. But never before has NOELGALLAGHER played BIG DAY OUT – that all changes this summer when NOEL GALLAGHER’S HIGH FLYING BIRDS make their New Zealand debut.

For the past two decades, his songs have stitched themselves into the fabric of our lives. And GALLAGHER knows it, swearing to never let a gig pass without playing a few Oasis classics. “I’m proud of them and of what they mean to people.” Therefore, NOEL GALLAGHER’S HIGH FLYING BIRDS will be bringing not only their brand new material (“the best collection of Noel Gallagher tunes since his 'Morning Glory’ days” - The Telegraph****), they will also bring a host of the some of the most loved rock anthems of the last 20 plus years; classics like ‘Wonderwall’, ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’ etc will feature in the set.

“Right now I’m more interested in something that’s a little more intimate and human,” he recently told Spin.  The High Flying Birds recent debut shows in Europe saw “A second coming, powered by an elated crowd having titanic moments on the balconies and singing every word” (London Evening Standard ****).  Clearly Noel is connecting with the crowds in a very big way.

Bear witness to a legend finding his feet in a whole new realm as NOEL GALLAGHERS HIGH FLYING BIRDS lift off at BIG DAY OUT 2012.

NERO (FULL LIVE BAND)

Why wait to see what the future holds? The future is now. The future is NERO. London dubsteppers Daniel Stephens and Joe Ray have bassquaked clubbers into devoted submission with dancefloor-shuddering singles Act Like You Know and Me & You – lifted from their killer debut, Welcome Reality – plus poptastic remixes for The Streets and Beyonce, and DJ sets that shake heads in disbelief. But it’s their brand new, full live set, complete with vocalist Alana Watson, that will transform the Boiler Room in a vision of some rock’n’roll-meets-sci-fi-back-to-the-future. Backed by live musicians and performing atop a podium built of ghetto blasters and arcade games, NERO deliver “a massive experience” (BrigNewspaper.com). Fire up the flux capacitor and set a course for NERO at BIG DAY OUT 2012.

THE VACCINES

BIG DAY OUT is proud to announce the arrival of a breakthrough discovery in the modern science of rock’n’roll … THE VACCINES. Not yet two years old, this four-piece has raced from fervent whisper on the London indie scene to full blown hype courtesy of their first singles, If You Wanna and Wreckin’ Bar (Ra Ra Ra), while their first live shows earned them tags like “indecently exciting” and “game changers”. With their March 2011 debut album, What Did You Expect From The Vaccines?, packing DNA from ’60s pop to the dirty fuzz of The Jesus & Mary Chain, and a live show The AU Review called “no-bullshit-just-rock”, THE VACCINES are heading to BIG DAY OUT 2012 for one hell of a good time.

BASSNECTAR

This adventure has no rules, no limitations and no hesitation in fusing the familiar with the strange or the classic with the cutting edge. It’s a combination of sound, force and weight and this my friends, can only mean one thing, put your hands in the air as we welcome BASSNECTAR to the BIG DAY OUT 2012. This is the brainchild of Lorin Ashton and it exists as an open-sourced musical project that is as diverse as it is heavy, as raw as it is meticulous, and as fierce as it is imaginary. Spanning the spectrum of sonic style, the music covers every genre imaginable and smashes it all into a synthesis of intense, wobbling basslines and hypnotic soundscapes. Described as the ‘festival king’ (DanceFever5000) BASSNECTAR’S show brings a wall of sound and light show to match. BASSNECTAR energizes audiences with an experience unlike any other, BIG DAY OUT 2012 punters take note - this is one set you don't wanna miss!

CAVALERA CONSPIRACY

BIG DAY OUT 2012 is bringing back one of the most infamous, revered names in modern metal – but not as you know it. From the brothers who brought us Brazil’s biggest export, Sepultura, comes CAVALERA CONSPIRACY. The hyper-charged attack, fierce riffage and percussive bombardment is still there, but this is “more brutal, more in your face,” says singer/guitarist Max Cavalera. He’s joined in CAVALERACONSPIRACY by brother Iggor Cavalera on drums, Marc Rizzo (Soulfly) on guitar and Johny Chow (Fireball Ministry) on bass. Their second album, Blunt Force Trauma, is pulverizing metal with punk attitude. On stage, it does exactly as the title suggests: “Each drum hit sounded like a signal for the apocalypse, while Max's thunderous roar ripped through the din” (ArtistDirect). Stepping out of the shadow of a legend is not for the faint-hearted… CAVALERA CONSPIRACY know no fear. Start shaking in your boots now, BIG DAY OUT punters.

REGURGITATOR

It’s been quite a few years between drinks for REGURGITATOR but their recent long player, SuperHappyFuntimesFriends, has put them firmly back onto the musical landscape and it certainly is a welcome return!  SuperHappyFuntimesFriends (say that three times fast!) was released last month to critical acclaim on no less than five different formats: vinyl, CD, cassette, download and for the first time in Australia, Playbutton (a wearable badge containing the whole album). Coinciding with this latest release, the band’s 2nd studio album, UNIT, recently came in at No. 10 on the Triple J Top 100 Australian Albums of all time.  With a 15 year career spanning 4 EPs, 17 singles and 13 albums and 6 ARIA Awards under their belts, BIG DAY OUT is pumped to welcome back their favourite Band in a Bubble on our 20th Anniversary year.

KIMBRA

If you are not familiar with her by now well then it really is about time you push that rock aside and step out into the light, as KIMBRA has officially arrived and claimed her position atop the throne of the music scene.  Adding not just a touch of glamour and sophistication to the lineup, KIMBRA offers up her debut album Vows, an eclectic blend of neo-pop and more moodier soulful tracks from the lead single Settle Down to the haunting duet Wandering Limbs.  “Kimbra is making pop music that will pull you from your seat and have you listening on a loop” (Stated Magazine, NYC).   Be at the official coronation of our latest pop princess at BIG DAY OUT 2012.

PARKWAY DRIVE

Blasting out of picturesque Byron Bay, almost as an affront to the serenity of their surrounds, PARKWAY DRIVE quickly established themselves as a formidable force in the heavy hardcore scene, even more so with the 2010 release of their ARIA Award winning album, Deep Blue.  A five-piece of awesome power and charisma, Blunt Magazine dubbed them as the band “destined to be the template heavy bands worldwide pinch”.  If that wasn’t praise enough, Metal Hammer UK said “Deep Blue isn’t just one of the albums of the year, it’s a game-changing contemporary metal album that will be revered for years to come”.  If you’re ready to be blown away, you’re ready for PARKWAY DRIVE at BIG DAY OUT 2012

MIDNIGHT YOUTH

If MIDNIGHT YOUTH’S debut album The Brave Don’t Run established their radio friendly rock sound as one of the brightest new acts on the New Zealand musical landscape, they’ve aimed an arena rock ready home run at everyone with newly unleashed second album World Comes Calling, a record that critics noted “hits every button marked epic that it can find”. The North Shore five piece had already struck gold several times over with anthemic hits like “All On Our Own” and “Cavalry” on their inescapable debut. This new album sees them leaping onto the stage this summer in form that suggests they are absolutely ready to rock, guitarist Simon Oscroft leading the charge with some of the most memorable lead work heard on a Kiwi album and frontman Jeremy Redmore working himself to the bone. Bold, brilliant and back

DAS RACIST

Chaos. What else would you expect from a trio touting weed-edge/Hare Krishna hardcore/art-rap/freak-folk? That’s DAS RACIST, and a little of their chaos goes a long way – all the way from Brooklyn, New York to BIG DAY OUT 2012. “Not organized chaos,” said the New York Times after witnessing DAS RACIST live, “but actual chaos: a thrilling unreliability.” After racking up YouTube hits with Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell, Spin voted DAS RACIST a must-hear at SXSW 2010… A year and two mix-tapes later, the group was on the magazine’s cover with debut album Relax. With an “uncanny ability to make party songs about lightning-rod topics” (Los Angeles Times), Himanshu Kumar Suri, Victor Vazquez and hype-man Ashok Kondabolu drop “a litany of lyrical hyperlinks displaying a vast knowledge of rap history, revolutionaries and race relations” (Spin). Oh, and they’re funny, too. Get in on the joke with DAS RACIST at BIG DAY OUT this summer.

SIX60

It took something special to knock Adele off her perch after a 26 week run at the top of the New Zealand album charts, and that special thing was the self-titled debut album by SIX60 . Within a week the album was Gold and the group – who formed in the infamous student flat at 660 Castle Street Dunedin that gave them their name just three years ago – were firmly established as not just one of the most exciting young bands in New Zealand but one ready to rumble with the best of them, bringing Tiki Taane in to co-produce their debut. Blending soul, rock, dubstep and drum and bass, their music is as dynamic, versatile and unexpected as their back story. Extended singer/songwriter jams incorporate dubstep sections as bridges, hard rocking guitar work duels with robust synthetics and thunderous low end bass over vibrant percussive rhythms, and in both voice and instrumentation infectious melody consistently shines through. If you like your New Zealand dub stepped up a notch away from the bbq end and you are one of the few not to have joined SIX60’s revolution, don’t wait a moment more, the party starts at this year’s Big Day Out.

MT. EDEN

Ditching the Dubstep from their name hasn’t affected the juggernaut progress of Auckland production duo Jesse Cooper and Harley Rayner as they put themselves firmly on the map – 70 million youtube plays and counting, world tours, major hook-ups and an album release looming. They are taking it all in their stride as they ascend towards the pinnacle of international success. Out of their teenage bedrooms,  MT EDEN are now working with some of the biggest artists and producers in the game. Expect them to fire up their trademark extended build-ups, drum solos, double and triple drops as MT EDEN take the Boiler crowd to the peak and tip them over the edge again and again.

THE ADULTS

Jon Toogood taking his critically acclaimed studio project onstage has been something of a musical reinvention at this stage of the Shihad frontman’s career. The NZ Herald called  THE ADULTS album “distinguished” in its diversity, which it certainly was – a collection of songs featuring Toogood joined by the combined and legendary talents of Tiki Taane, Shayne Carter, Ladi6, Julia Deans, Anika Moa and more. Choosing to go with a stripped back powerhouse of a live line-up, Toogood selected Carter and Deans to join him as the live Adults – and if it is not enough to see three of the country’s most accomplished frontpeople and vocalists weaving their magic together, you can witness what the Herald came along to praise as “the symmetry of a beautifully melded trio” as they switch between instruments and breathe unexpected power into The Adults’ songs. Definitely some good old-fashioned grown-up fun.

I AM GIANT

I AM GIANT might be busy now planting their feet in their hometown of London but their roots are firmly in NZ where drummer Shelton Woolright and bassist Paul Matthews plied their trade in bands like Blindspott, Stylus and Tadpole before hooking up with English vocalist Ed Martin and guitar slinger Aja Timu. It’s also New Zealand where their string of four consecutive Rock Airplay number ones and Gold selling debut EP and (about to be Gold) album have given I AM GIANT’s hard-hitting explosion of sound and melody its first taste of success – something that is sure to be repeated internationally. With world champion surfer Kelly Slater and skater Tony Hawk featuring in their videos, the band’s music is finely tuned to reach its audience – kids who want pure, unadulterated rock with its heart on its sleeve and unquenchable fire in its soul. I AM GIANT  – back in New Zealand this summer and standing taller than ever.

CAIRO KNIFE FIGHT

Tooled up with an arsenal of drums, guitar, synth bass and loop pedals, CAIRO KNIFE FIGHT are a duo that pack a riff-driven punch that has seen them hold their own against the title holders they’ve shared stages with – names like Foo Fighters, Them Crooked Vultures and Queens of the Stone Age. If there was  new ground between the power of Led Zeppelin and the fearlessness of Radiohead, Nick Gaffaney and Aaron Tokona have marked that out as their own territory in CAIRNO KNIFE FIGHT. With two fearless EPs now under their belt and a bout of international touring that saw them wow New York crowds at CMJ with their incredible musicianship, CAIRO KNIFE FIGHT are simply saying put your dukes up, they are taking on all challengers in 2012.

JAKOB

When last year’s BDO headliners Tool announced their Australian side shows, they’d already selected the band they wanted to open for them – Napier post-rock trio JAKOB . At times putting the post- into rock, and at others kicking the whole bloody fence down, JAKOB’s lush and textured take on the guitar/bass/drums format continues to broaden and enthrall with every performance and release. Their music has been captivating and mesmerizing people the world over since 1998, the sedate becoming devastating in the blink of a crowd’s collective eye. Bands such as Isis, Pelican and the Hidden Hand have invited them to share the stage and they’ve toured backing former Can legend Damo Suzuki. Fresh out of sessions for a new album recorded at Neil Finn’s Roundhead studio, JAKOB  will be blazing another sonic sunset at this year’s Big Day Out, melting a few brains along the way.

BULLETPROOF

For over a decade, the name "BULLETPROOF" has stood for nothing less than forward thinking future bass music. Always staying one step ahead of the game, BULLETPROOF has moved his sound deeper into the new world of dubstep, but veers away from the relentless chainsaw style in favour of more bass heavy musical dance floor styles of beats.  His 2011 album Dub Me Crazy follows the award-winning Soundtrack To Forever and features a who’s who of NZ names like Tiki Taane, Anika Moa, Hollie Smith, Kidz In Space, Jessie Gurunathan and Computers Want Me Dead. The album title track featuring the stunning vocal talents of Jessie G has already been coined the local dubstep anthem of the year.

JUNICA

Welcome to JUNICA  - the mystical pop world of Wellington’s Nik Brinkman. It's a place populated by shimmery stars and pyramids; taking inspirations from relationships to space ships, he melds melancholy with optimism in the way that only great pop music can. JUNICA is about stepping out from the shadows to shine. Former frontman with indie-darlings Over The Atlantic, who toured internationally with Beach House and Ladyhawke, Brinkman travelled the world to write songs for this new band with such luminaries as Peter Moren (Peter, Bjorn, and John), Emanuel Lundgren (I’m From Barcelona), and Tim Anderson (Ima Robot, Dead Man’s Bones). The first single ‘Living In My House’ features longtime friend Pip Brown and was recorded at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studio. Evolved from a childhood listening to The Church, Cocteau Twins, The Cure and Kate Bush, Nik Brinkman has spent time figuring out how to make the brand of pop music he had in his head a reality, and now Junica is that spectral reality unveiled.

@PEACE

@PEACE is a collaborative project from two New Zealand lyricists Tom Scott and Lui Tuiasau. Executive produced by Christoph El Truento (Wonderful Noise) and mastered by Benny Tones (Electric Wire Hustle, BBE), the group’s self-titled debut album sees the two writers – respectively from Homebrew (Scott) and Nothing To Nobody (Tuiasau) scratch the underbelly of life in New Zealand with the sharpest rhymes of the year over a musical brew with an unexpected and distinctly mellow flavour. When they hit the road, @PEACE roll with what Volume magazine called “a body-moving soundscape created by El Truento on beats, B-Haru on keys and drums, and Dick Dastardly on beats and sax, Tom Scott and Lui Tuiasau had the audience eating their words up like a late-night kebab”. These songs about the life of two 'Nobodies' who "stand in the WINZ line" echo the independent rap movement of the nineties but they are surely a local hip-hop highlight of the year.

DJ SIR-VERE

‘The crunkest in charge’ – that’s when New Zealand's number one turntable rocker, DJ SIR-VERE steps to the turntables. The party gets buck and the story could end there. It doesn't though, and it sure as hell didn't start there either. A South Pacific Hip-Hop pioneer, DJ SIR-VERE has spent the last six years turning his Major Flavours into Australasia’s number one hip-hop brand and accepting credit for helping launch the careers of Scribe, Savage and P-Money. SIR-VERE’s track record speaks volumes but it is in the club where he really comes into his own. Rocking crowds with both turntables and a microphone, whether he's serving commercial anthems or underground bangers, you get exactly what you need. It's safe to say this DJ ain't half-stepping; and will have his cake and eat it. Heck, he might even offer you a slice. DJ SIR-VERE is in the building, thank him later.

NICK D

When it come to the sound of the NZ dancefloor, not many can lay claim to being a bigger ambassador over the years in New Zealand than NICK D. If this was a woolshed he’d be a black singlet clad maniac with a pair of clippers taking to your sheep like brains to shape your musical taste for the better. From hosting TV shows on Max TV, Juice TV and C4 to being on radio more than half his life and a club DJ playing all over the world and spinning sets in Brazil, South Africa, Singapore, Israel, NICK D has spread the word and filled more than his share of floors. On the ones and twos, you can expect what you hear on his George FM breakfast show or his acclaimed international TV series Making Tracks – an upfront selection of some of the wildest party beats and exotic treats NICK D has smuggled home from all far corners of the globe

And the  ‘win a slot on the BDO’ band (to be announced in December). So in summary, the stellar cast of the BIG DAY OUT 2012 Auckland are:

SOUNDGARDEN, KASABIAN, MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE, THE LIVING END, BATTLES, GIRL TALK, PARKWAY DRIVE, RÖYKSOPP, FOSTER THE PEOPLE, GIN WIGMORE, CUT OFF YOUR HANDS, UNKOWN MORTAL ORCHESTRA, CAGE THE ELEPHANT, BEASTWARS, GHOSTWAVE, BEST COAST, MAYAVANYA, DAVID DALLAS and TONY HAWK with NOEL GALLAGHER’S HIGH FLYING BIRDS, NERO (LIVE), THE VACCINES, BASSNECTAR, CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, REGURGITATOR, KIMBRA, MIDNIGHT YOUTH, DAS RACIST, SIX60, MT EDEN, THE ADULTS, I AM GIANT, CAIRO KNIFE FIGHT, JAKOB, BULLETPROOF, JUNICA, @PEACE, DJ SIR-VERE and NICK D
