New Zealand On Air has announced its allocation of funding for two new TV programmes showcasing New Zealand's musical history. Following in the footsteps of popular BBC music series like Walk On By, Give It A Whirl is a six part documentary series which will explore the history of popular New Zealand music from the 1950s to the present day and will screen on TV One.
Produced by Richard Driver, the series will cover the songs, the artists, the fans and the lifestyle of each era in New Zealand's rich pop music history. Meanwhile, Under The Influence - The Flying Nun Story focusses solely on the label considered by many to be New Zealand's most successful independent record label. The one and a half hour documentary is being produced by the Satellite Media Group - those hard working folks who bring you Space, Squeeze and m2 every week - and will be shown on TV2. The show will centre on the label's recent 21st Anniversary celebrations, and will chart the ups and downs of the independent label's past through in-depth interviews with key characters in the Flying Nun story to date.
Thanks to un-chart-ed for this story.
