APRA Announces date for 2006 Silver Scrolls

17 July 2006 - 0 Comments

The date has been set for New Zealand’s premier song writing awards.

The prestigious 2006 APRA Silver Scroll Award will be presented at an exclusive invite - only event at the Auckland Town Hall on Wednesday 20 September.

“This special ceremony brings together and celebrates songwriters, composers and musicians from a huge range of musical genres and backgrounds, ” says Anthony Healey, APRA’s NZ Director.

The Silver Scroll Award is New Zealand’s pre-eminent song writing award and recognises simple creative excellence. Since it was first presented in 1965 to Kent Healey for 'Teardrops' the award has acknowledged the song writing achievements of many talented New Zealanders, including Bic Runga, Neil Finn, Bill Urale, Dave Dobbyn, Shona Laing, Hammond Gamble, Don McGlashan and Greg Johnson. Last year Evermore won with their song 'It's Too Late'.

Four other awards will be presented at the 2006 APRA Silver Scroll Awards -

- The Most Performed Work Overseas Award
- The Most Performed Work in New Zealand Award
- The SOUNZ Contemporary Award, recognising creative excellence by a NZ composer
- The APRA Maioha Award presented for the best Maori waiata of the year.

Elected APRA members have one more week to submit their works for the Silver Scroll Award, the APRA Maioha Award and the SOUNZ Contemporary Award. Applications close 5pm next Friday 21 July. Forms can be completed online or downloaded from the APRA website: www.apra.co.nz or by contacting APRA directly.

Separate, genre-specific panels will then judge entries. Commercial success is not a consideration. Finalists will be announced late August.APRA is a non-profit organisation administering the rights of the world’s composers, songwriters and publishers in Australasia. APRA represents over 42,000 writers and publishers through direct membership, with over 5,500 NZ members, and over 2 million writers and publishers throughout the world under reciprocal agreements with other
service organisations.
