To be precise it is a tiny bit more than a month since the end of NZ Music Month 2006, but with a staggering amount having gone on in May it’s taken us a while to get our heads around just how massive the celebration was this year.
New Zealanders bought nearly 20% more NZ Music during May than in the previous month, and the proportion of local albums in the Top 20 reached 30% in the last two weeks of NZ Music Month – meaning almost 1 in 3 albums sold for a fortnight were by NZ artists. Albums by Yulia, OpShop, Nesian Mystik and The Bleeders all received gold or platinum certification in May, and Savage feat. Aaradhna reached gold status. And the DVD of last year’s NZ Music Month launch gig blew away the competition – Shihad’s ‘Love Is The New Hate’ DVD going a long way to help NZ DVDs make up over 10% of sales and rise an incredible 1910% over April.
The volume of live shows around the country was extraordinary, and not in a noise control way (although standing right in front of the PA while the Bleeders rocked our Wellington launch wasn’t my best idea). By the 1st of May the official NZ Music Month gig guide had over 500 listings nationwide, meaning - at the very least - tens of thousands of gig-goers throughout the month.
The celebrations were evident all around the country, with places like Wairarapa, Greymouth, and Palmerston North all putting their hands up to cheer on our homegrown musical talent in a big way. The press around New Zealand were also hugely supportive, from the Ashburton Guardian to the Sunday Star-Times, resulting in a whopping press file here at the NZMIC that has doubled last year’s.
And with posters in locations stretching from lightboxes around Auckland to pubs in Invercargill, not to mention the official t-shirts all over the place, you must have had your eyes shut not to have seen a NZ Music Month target this May.
We’re stoked with how everything went and hope all of you had a great time at shows or listening to NZ Music wherever you might have been. And between now and May next year we’ll be coming up with a whole lot more for you to sink your teeth into… watch this space!
Finally we’d like to extend our gratitude to everyone who helped make NZ Music Month so great this year. There are way, way too many of you to thank here – while it’s cheesy to say ‘you know who you are’, it’s true as well…
