On the 26th of July, Gurl the short film musical will have its World Premiere at the ASB Waterfront Theatre as part of Nga Whanaunga Maori Pasifika Shorts 2020 at the New Zealand International Film Festival. Today What Kind of Coffee Do You Like? single is released as a preview to the soundtrack of the movie.
What Kind of Coffee Do You Like? featuring Jay Tewake, Jackie Clarke, Brady Peeti and the cast of Gurl is a remix version of Mika Haka song Coffee, brings a more 70's feel to the song with a big band throwing back to the disco.
Gurl is Mika’s unique lightly disguised retelling of the true story of Carmen, New Zealand’s infamous Maori drag queen, in which he re-imagines the Golden Age of New Zealand's 1970's bustling underground sex scene, as told to Mika by Carmen Rupe. It is 20-minute short film made as a chapter in the planned feature The Book of Carmen, it will screen in the New Zealand International Film Festival in the Nga Whanaunga Maori Pasifika Shorts 2020 selection curated by Leo Koziol and Craig Fasi. The Festival is also planning screenings of Nga Whanaunga in cinemas in Auckland (ASB Waterfront Theatre & Monterey Howick Cinemas), Tauranga (Rialto), Dunedin (Regent), New Plymouth (Len Lye Centre), and Wellington (Roxy Cinema). Tickets on sale from individual cinemas.
The album soundtrack, which is due to be released on the 24th of July, before the movie premiere, gives you the same vibe as What Kind of Coffee Do You Like?, a 70's dark night club that reminds you of a time where people drink giant bottles of beer and smoking in bars was cool.
The soundtrack features amazing vocalist with not just Jackie Clarke, Jay Tewake and Brady Peeti, but also Frankie Stevens, Gail Tipene, Rosanna Raymond and Mika Haka.
All music will be available on all major streaming platforms including Spotify, Apple Music, Youtube Music and more.
