An honest and candid song about the ongoing pursuit of happiness, Depressed melds indie-rock with big-pop production.
“I was depressed for such a long time; I felt like I had tried everything to be happy and nothing was changing. I had lost sight of what it feels like to be happy - in the same way you forget what it’s like to be healthy when you have a cold,” says Wells*, whose real name is Josh Naley.
Depressed was written by Josh; co-produced with his friend Struan Finlay and mixed by Grammy Award-winning US engineer Jeff Ellis, who has mixed for the likes of Frank Ocean and Jeremy Zucker.
Josh has been songwriting and performing since he was 10. In the past few years he has loaned his talents to playing with acts such as Robinson, Thomston and Navvy; alongside studying music at University of Auckland, where he honed his skills as a producer.
The Wells* project materialised as a natural extension of Josh’s desire to create something more personal. Through an experimental approach to alt-pop production, with a focus on infectious melodies, he channels his increasingly diverse musical influences into a sound which is distinctly his own.
Using Wells* as his outlet, Josh continues to evolve his songwriting in a direction where he is able to lay out his own personal experiences in ways that are relatable and can resonate deeply with his audience.
And, Depressed is no exception. It makes way for the release of Tape 3, which follows Tape 1 and Tape 2.
