Tamaki Makaurau multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Emily Rice has today released Arise - the second single from her upcoming EP, Auaha.

An empowering and uplifting song, which blends silky, smooth melodies with soulful and dreamy beats and inspiring lyricism, Emily describes Arise as “a bit of a personal mantra.”
Arise was written during the first lockdown in 2020 as part of a creative project, in which Emily challenged herself to create daily throughout the entire month of April. What emerged from the ‘Auaha April challenge’ were the waiata for her upcoming body of work, aptly titled Auaha.
“Auaha is a word that means create, form or bring into being and each day the group hosts would share a daily topic and everyone who wanted to would take the theme and create something that was linked to it - be it a poem, a painting, a photo, or anything,” she explains.
Emily wrote 26 songs over the month and says that Arise is one of her favourites from the bunch. “It’s all about grabbing hold of those moments when you feel inspired, rather than letting them slip past.”
She adds that the first lockdown also brought a silver lining, and Arise brings that all flooding back. “I’m reminded of the special time that the lockdown was for our whare. My sister had just got home from Israel and she moved in with me and my husband for the lockdown. We were joined by our lil doggo and a kitten we decided to get the day before lockdown from a cat rescue. I loved the time we had to take the days exactly as we wanted them, not rushed, but full of so many little joys.”
With a sound that defies genre and is ever-evolving, Emily has three EPs to her name, as well as an impressive list of accolades, including twice being a finalist for ‘Songwriter of the Year’ when she was studying at pop music school. She is also a multi-talented instrumentalist and singer, who has performed throughout Europe. When she’s not making music under her own name, she’s one half of the bi-lingual duo Aro - a two-time finalist in the prestigious Silver Scroll Awards.
Her new EP, Auaha, which is a seamless blend of chill DnB-meets-RnB pop, is due out in the coming months. All songs on the EP, including Arise were produced, recorded and mixed by M J Collier/ Leone at Aro Music Studio and Little Lion Studio. The EP was mastered by Vivek Gabriel of Gabriel Audio.
